When I play full chords or dissonant notes through my SS amp (roland cube), the distortion sounds terrible. Its ugly and not in that cool dissonance kind of way. Will getting a tube amp (which I plan on doing soon anyway) fix this or is it just that complex chords don't work with heavy distortion?

Check your tuning and intonation. A tube amp will sound better in my opinion, but I don't think it will provide the solution your looking for. I still recommend upgrading to tubes though...
Guitars are like my babies... except without that useless baby meat...

Try backing off on your volume knob, or on the gain, just a bit. In my experience, if you use a high amount of gain on your power chords, it might sound awesome, but the same amount won't do for open chords, barre chords and dissonant. Even Dime backed off his volume for a bit when doing dissonant stuff.
