I'm looking for a new, preferably tube amp. I was thinking maybe Marshall's MG series, but I just read they're Solid State. Any opinions on those? Does Crate make any good tube amps? I'm really disappointed with my Line 6 Spider III. It starts crackling at high volumes and when palm muting and bending. Anyway, Any help?

You're looking at Valve Juniors, a small crate palomino, the blackheart combo etc.

Unless you play blues up to classic rock, I'd suggest saving more money.
New tracks on my profile! Please check them out and see what you think!

Is that Crate Tube?
It's a hybrid. Not all tube.
IC op amps on the input, tubes later to the output.

So does that mean that if you use an op-amp driven pedal before your all-tube amp, it's not all-tube anymore?

So, the v8 doesn't have preamp tubes?

I thought it had one preamp and one EL84? Wouldn't that make it all tube? Yeah, the gain stages are IC based, but it's still a tube amp.

I believe the Blackheart 1 amp will be about that price, but that won't be out until April. I'm assuming this is for a practice amp, if not you are out of luck because even just the 5 amp Blackheart head is that much, and that is about as cheap as it gets for tube amps.

5W tube is plenty loud for a band situation.
Heads will roll. Throats will be slit. Blood will flow like springs of water.

There is a 12ax7 preamp tube after an IC gain stage. I would still consider it to be an "all-tube" amp, rather than a hybrid. It's got the most gain of all of these little 5W amps, and I'm sure that's a result of those IC stages. If you're looking for a more bluesy, traditional sound, maybe the VJ is a better choice. Being that the Blackheart is also a Crate product, as is the newer V5, I wonder if they have IC stages in their preamps, too.

Hmmm....

Not IMHO.

My personal feeling is that 15W is the bare minimum for a band, and that 30W is the ideal. A 5W amp will get completely drowned out if there's another guitar or keyboard, and will struggle to get over even a light drummer and bass in a three-man situation.

If you're looking for a tube amp for jamming, I strongly suggest you hold out for something like the Crate V16 or Fender Pro Jr., at least.
You Don't Need a halfstack.

You Don't Need 100W.

i love you slats.

Slats is right, 5 watts won't get it unless mic'd (not a bad thing.) 15 watts is a minimum, 30 is safer if you want any unmic'd cleans.
Tube purists (my hat off to them) don't consider a lot of amps pure tube that are considered tube by most. Even a solid-state rectifier disqualifies most amps to the purists. I don't have a problem with it.
