Jimi Hendrix was in the 101st Airborne, but got a medical discharge, though it's more likely that they booted him just because he really wasn't useful in the army at all.

He was arrested when he was a teen for stealing from a clothing store.

And driving in a stolen car, which I beleive is the reason he joined the 101st Airborne, cos it was that or prison.

I've heard people say it but I've never seen documented evidence of it. I have, however, seen the reports of Hendrix constantly being AWOL, being caught masturbating while on duty, and being described as having "no known good characteristics".

there's various reasons. chief among them, he broke his ankle and got a medical discharge. The other is he went to his CO and told them he was coming out of the closet (he's not gay, he just wanted out of the army). Wikipedia mentions these although it also says that "His commanding officers considered him to be a sub-par soldier: he slept while on duty, had little regard for regulations, required constant supervision, and showed no skill as a marksman. For these reasons, his commanding officers submitted a request that Hendrix be discharged from the military after he had served only one year."

either way, he stated after the fact that it wasn't to get out of serving in Vietnam (he really hated communists apparently) but he loved guitar so much.

I would think its a combination of all three of these theories. Simply breaking your ankle once or being a crappy soldier by themselves wouldn't get you discharged. They put you on KP and other crappy jobs.
