I recently recalled a show that was aired on VH1 back in, I think, 2003, and I found it interesting. It was VH1's list of the "25 greatest power ballads" of all time. I figured my fellow-UGers would get a kick out of it (of course, the general consensus is that all "best" lists are biased and absurd, but this one seems particularly humorous).

Here was the list in order:

25. Lita Ford featuring Ozzy Osbourne "Close My Eyes Forever"
24. Van Halen "When It's Love"
23. Staind "It's Been Awhile"
22. The Scorpions "Still Loving You"
21. Queensrchye "Silent Lucitidy"
20. Tesla "Love Song"
19. Kid Rock "Only God Knows Why"
18. Cinderella "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)"
17. Heart "These Dreams"
16. Nickleback "How You Remind Me"
15. Skid Row "I Remember You"
14. REO Speedwagon "Keep On Loving You"
13. Lenny Kravitz "Again"
12. Motley Crue "Home Sweet Home"
11. Metallica "Nothing Else Matters"
10. Whitesnake "Is This Love"
9. Night Ranger "Sister Christian"
8. Def Leppard "Love Bites"
7. Poison "Every Roase Has It's Thorn"
6. Guns N' Roses "November Rain"
5. Bon Jovi "I'll Be There For You"
4. Creed "With Arms Wide Open"
3. Kiss "Beth"
2. Aerosmith "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing"
1. Journey "Open Arms"

Thoughts?

random list on "best songs ever" = $$$

i wouldn't worry about this garbage. i don't. kinda like the rolling stone 100 greatest guitarists- it isn't the greatest, it is the most well known.

Whitesnake - Now you're gone > Whitesnake - Is this love

=(

It's not amazing, it's not bad either. I don't wanna miss a thing should be first, IMO.

"is this love" is a great song, a good power ballad, although I havent heard the other one.

"Nothing else Matters" screams power ballad; actually, no it doesnt, its much better than the ones that go way over the top, like "I would do anything for love", which just annoys me.

Now You're Gone is a really similar song but a bit more expressive and with Steve Vai's guitar style a lot more noticeable. But yeah I agree, Is this love is also a great song.

WTF? Where's "Thank You?"

Would "Somebody to Love" - Queen count? If so, should be there.

Have you even heard these songs? Just because you don't like the bands doesnt mean they aren't good power ballads.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to put it, along with your other advice, into a book, the pages of which I will then use to wipe my ass.

Winner!

I still think November Rain should top the list though.

"How You Remind Me" is, in all honesty, one of the worst songs I have ever heard. Ever. And to think they're entire sound is based on writing different variations of that piece of trash, calling it a new song, and filling an album worth of material through that very process is just maddening.

Bonus: Chad Kroeger is one of those "I can shred it up but I choose not to" guitarists.

nothing else matter surely isn't metal but dude a power ballad? wtf? METALLICA PERSONALLY HATES THOSE BANDS WHY THE F*** WOULD THEY MAKE MUSIC LIKE THEM?

Nothing else matters is not a power ballad; it just happens to be a soft song. Not mentioned.
Amanda - Boston
Just Between You and Me - April Wine
Feel Like Making Love - Bad Company. Arguable one of the first power ballads ever.
More Than Words Can Say - Alias
Who's Crying Now - Journey; superior to Open Arms by a mile, with one of the best outro's ever.
All We Are - Kim Mitchell. If you have never heard it, find it on you tube or something and listen. Awesome song!!!!

Staind?... That's like something that would go on Big Shiny Tunes, not a Power Ballads DVD. However I'm not sure if this would fit right in but Love Reign O'er me by The Who should be on there.

Personally I think that song was OK. It's not the most musical band, but hey, it's one of their better albums. After it they started to become extremely mainstream and fall apart (to me)

So that makes his music bad? I mean, don't get me wrong, Nickelback isn't the greatest band on the planet but "How You Remind Me" IS a half decent power ballad..
