if you need versitility go for a modeling amp. dare i say a spider III. if you want all tube look into the epiphone valve jr or a blackheart amp but those are hard to get your hands one.

Fender SuperChamp or VibroChamp both sound really good for goofing around at home. Maybe have like 16 effects pre-sets you can tweak for a good amount of sound options. I think they are 5watt Class A and 10watt Class A. Should be $250 - $300 and IMO sound really really good.
