3 = ring finger
2 = middle
1 = index

3-2-1-2-3-2-1

most players play 3-2-1-3-2-1

Is there such a thing as a heavy riff with out chugging on the e string?

Yeah, he uses 3212. I can use both if needed, but I usually use 321 321 321, it avoids using one finger (middle) more than the rest.

As said before it's 3-2-1-2-3

Personally, I think that's quite hard. Try 3-2-1-3-2-1 or 1-3-2-1-3-2

Yeah i can 3-2-1 triplet all day. Just i noticed it always makes a gallop type of sound, which is cool as all hell. Maiden made it sound awesome and for the most part it does. But sometimes i just want fast gallopless triplets, more for the death metal parts.

Actually, 3-2-1-2.

Doing that fast is easier than 3-2-1-3-2-1 fast.

Unless you are going for a triplet feel.

3212 is probably better for most stiuations though, simply as measures are divided into multiples of 4 in most music.
