Every year my school puts on this big talent show and i was thinking of entering. The thing is I have a friend who everyone knows is a great guitar player (he plays things by Stevie Ray Vaughn and Hendrix) and I just want to prove to people that I am also a good guitar player.

I'm trying to find a song that will impress people. I'm an intermediate player (been playing for 3 years) and I'm looking for a rock song with an pretty easy solo and will put on a show.

Highway to Hell? You would definitely need a band though.

Pride and Joy would be a great choice. The solo isn't toooo bad.

Meh, just go up and tap randomly. That impresses most people. People who play guitar will probably think you're a wank though. Just play something fun, you don't need to prove yourself to anybody. It's not going to make you a better player anyways. Maybe we can be the new generation of guitar players. Now with toned down ego!

Through Fire and Flames? No, im just kidding.

Try to pull some people together to form a one time band. Play some Nirvana or Fall out Boy and make the girls love you. It's easy and its sounds decent.
#5
Through Fire and Flames. If you can play it, you will autopwn the other guy. although you probably can't. You could play all along the watchtower, the hendrix version. The solos on that aren't too difficult.

Freebird!!

More realistically, play something people will know.
Maybe you should ask some people what songs they recognize (not musicians) and you can work from there.

If you play with the motivation being that you want to impress people, you're probably going to fail.

And what's stopping you from playing hendrix or SRV? After 3 years you should at least be able to handle Hey Joe or Purple Haze...

dont do anything overrated like freebird or through the fire and flames, mainly because almost everyone who knows about them thinks they know about music from playing stupid ****ing guitar hero. all along the watchtower is a good idea
#14
just improvise. i dont like to play other people's song during a concert. is annoying cause i nthe back of your head there is always going to be a voice telling you you're not playing accurate enough to the real track

dude play "Under the Bridge" by RHCP and sing it. not only will you impress people... you'll get chicks since you also sang lol. that's what im gonna try for my talent show anyways

If you want to play to impress people just alternate pick this

High e: 19-18-16 over and over. And if you really want to go nuts. Go to the B string too!

People are easily impressed. Try to do something that you feel will challenge you, not only to play, but to play live in front of people. Use it as an opportunity to work on the things you need to work on, not to impress a bunch of n00bs.

EDIT: Seize the Day by Avenged Sevenfold is easy with a guitar solo that will make all the womenz want you. Not because it's fast, it's just very emotional.

That was by far the hardest thing mentioned in this thread....

Midnight - Joe Satriani

Looks really cool with the 2 hand tapping and it's not too hard.

People love theme music too, such as Mario or the Halo theme. Otherwise they don't recognize something, therefore the cool factor drops.

Its not that I want to impress people it's just that everyone thinks my friend is like a guitar god, and I just want to show people I am not to shabby either.

I agree, with the condition that you sing, too. I did that last year without vocals, and it was kind of weird. But it's a good song that people recognize and enjoy.
The statement below is true.

I'm entering a school talent show with my friends, a drummer and a bassist, we're playing Paranoid by Black Sabbath with solos for each instrument then Devil In Jersey City by Coheed and Cambria, all with no singer, but it's a school talent show, we're the only people doing something that isn't pressing play on a CD player and jumping about.

And I second Midnight by Satch, don't need a band, it's simple, you can add bits easily and it impresses.

Besides, noone's gonna know it and noone's gonna understand it, therefore noone's gonna like it.

I would say "Jessica" by the Allman Brothers. Instrumental, and it really sounds nice. Plus, if your school is like every other school, they'll recognize the song merely from GH2. Stupid game.

Thanks, I do love my Jam groups

And back to the topic, you could just stick a backing track on, could be to a song, could be a jam track and just improv it.
A good one to try would be to stick the Little wing backing track through a decent set of speakers, improv an intro in E, then work the backing track, I love doing this, just at home by myself, it's fun with any backing track really.

And if you have access to another decent guitarist, two words that will have the people at your mercy, Guitar Battle, if you don't want to add one to a song, Emerald by Thin Lizzy has a short one.

Hotel California has an even longer one, and the lyrics would be easy enough for them to sing...

Orrrrrrrr, you could play this and I would love you: http://youtube.com/watch?v=6OD8xHMXX9E
