It's like a Piezo. It picks up frequencies from the bridge and you get an acoustic sound from it in a nutshell.

a fishman uses a piezo pickup that pick up the vibrations of the strings

I think its like a pickup thats built into the actual bridge.
And no, I havent tried one, but it doesnt sound like it has much more to offer than say a piezo
