I need new pickups:
-i have an epi les paul studio
-i NEED a good clean tone
-i would like a nice distorted tone as well
-i would like crisp chords, good crunch and slippery gain, and nice pinch harmonics

what do you recommend?

well i'm satisfied with my sound, but at the store i tried a gibson les paul studio (vs. my epi) in the same amp and it had a little extra "oomph" if you will. the cleans were warmer and crispier, and the distorted tones were better.

If you liked that, look for Gibby pups mainly, maybe try the Burstbuckers

Didn't Kerry King use MGs at some point?

I think he just endorses them because he likes sacks of money

new pickups help, but an all tube amp helps even more, so make that your priority. the difference between pickups really isnt THAT big whereas the difference between amps is.

If you liked the way that sounded, go back to the store,
and ask them what pickups the studio had in it.

But remember, the amp will sound different, in a different room.
Does your bedroom (or wherever you practice) have the same dimensions
as the music store?

Do you have the same acoustic treatment on your walls, floor, and ceiling?

Do you have dozens of amps nearby
with their cones moving sympathetically with the sound from your amp?

Pickups might get you the sound you're looking for,
or you might be chasing an elusive dream.
