Yup, *runs to check his own hot rod* your hot rod is 8 ohms so you'd need an 8 ohm speaker. It's that simple.
I don't give a shit if you listen to me or not

but does it have to be eight ohms?

like if it can handle 8 ohms then so could a 16ohm speaker right? would a 16 ohm speaker work? and a 4ohm speaker fail?

It's not like watts. Amps can stand a certain mismatch in impedance, but generally you're better off just matching, especially in a case when the speaker you want is readily available in the impedance you need.

Color?

I honestly don't think you'll like the V30 in a Hot Rod, eventhough it says Vintage in the name, it sounds much better in amps that use more distortion.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

If you mean brand then that's up to you, any 6l6 will do. I have JJ's and think they sound amazing, slightly earlier break-up and much smoother sounding. They're a bit darker then the re-labeled sovteks it came with.

Edit: ^ yeah I meant to say something about that. Ted weber makes a specific 12" speaker for fender amps like that I'd check his stuff out tedweber.com

I think Fenders are matched pretty well speaker wise. I wouldn't go about changing it, you'll probably end up hating your tone. Just swap the tubes for now and see if it improves from there.

+1. Check out Weber, or one of these: http://warehousespeakers.com/products.php?cat=9&PHPSESSID=28d9b525be1ec7ecd3df360c5e359ec7

Celestion is kind of the Gibson or Marshall of speakers. Great stuff, but you can get 95% of the way to the same tone for half the cost, if you don't mind a different brand name.
