I was having a look at Tears in Heaven which is obviously pretty easy. It seemed easier (as in not having to bother moving my index finger) to thumb some of the Low E's Hendrix style.

Is it a lazy technique or do you think it's really up to the player?

I wouldnt be surprised if the first thing Varg did was sign up for WoW so he could kick some Judeo-Christian ass.

You'd have to have an incredibly small hand not to be able to.

Eric Clapton played like this in original so i don't see the problem. If you can do it and it's easier than go for it, it's economy playing not lazy.

Everyone I've seen playing this song have used their thumb.
So go for it

How do you physically download an album? Like run your computer off a dynamo on an exercise bike?

Using your thumb is a technique that will allow you to play much more technically. If you can fret the E and the A with your thumb, you can then play barre chords like this, and you will have so much more freedom, to add little bits in. I think people generally say it's against the "normal" way to play, but all the greats play(ed) like this.

Also, Clapton uses his thumb for this song, as its far easier.

Some stuff you just can't play, or becomes exceptionally to play without your thumb, so its a useful technique to learn.

Fenders/squires also have necks that are alot easier
to use the thumb on than gibson/epiphones. sometimes when I
go from my strat to my lp or my sg..it feels like im trying
to handle a baseball bat...lol...Dont get too discouraged if
you dont do it as easily as the stratman does it.

It is hardly a lazy tenchnique and i guarantee if you think that is how it should be played it will sound better than ever.
