Depends on the song.
And what is more, there's been a bloody purple nose and some bloody purple clothes that were messing up the lobby floor. It's just apartment house rules so all you 'partment fools remember : one man's ceiling is another man's floor.

However long it can be while fitting the song IMO. There should be no limitations.

No offense but this thread contains no relativity and is completely void of logic.

the length of the solo doesn't matter ,but it's gotta stay interesting to listen to. for example a 20 min solo with only pentatonic licks is extremely boring
#12
depends on the song.
should be atleast half of the song though..
just give me a fender and let me rip
#13
depends on the song, but the general rule of thumb for rock and pop based stuff is that it shouldn't be longer than one of the songs verses.

People who say long solos are boring need to suck a muffler

I usually make my solos half as long as a song is
so if i have a 4 minute song, i stick in a two minute solo

but 30 minute solos are kick ass too

How long is a piece of string?

I was going to come up with so elaborate, rude remark for the TS's question but you have the perfect answer. Thank you

as many said - as long as needed for the song.

But personally, I think when you shred for over a 20 sec. - half minute it starts to become really boring.

Or atleast average shredding does :p

This is why we drummers and bassists hate guitarists. We sit back and listen to you play the same stupid notes over as we play over it for you like little slaves. It's not Jealousy, it's just annoying.

Agreed with both. If it is melodically relevent and entertaining.

But if it is going to be real long, the best things to do are:

be melodically dynamic (switch Major to minor, this mode to that mode, etc.)

Rhythm and tempo changes.

Have a good song w/ or w/o the solo

Mostly these solos are for just metal, blues, jazz, jam, or shred bands.

Still pertaining to fitting the song melodically and be entertaining.

Depends, if it's an 5 min song, it should be 1-2 minutes

If it's an epic 3 hour song, then go for it!

Because Drum solos don't exist right? I mean, Neal Pert never went on a drum solo for 20 minutes right? Thats just blasphemous, and Double Bass solos never occur in jazz, right?

But as a general rule of thumb, a guitar solo shouldn't be all of the song, to the poiint where its the only thing people can remember about it. *coughfreebirdcough*

As long as they need to be?

Sometimes, a short lead phrase that is executed well is all you need, and sometimes a huge lead that lasts more than a few minutes is great too.

I never said that. It's just that half the time a guitarist goes into a solo too annoyingly loud he'll ignore everyone else when they try to get him to stop.

As long as you feel it needs to be. Sometimes when I write a song, I include one big solo that's about 1-2 minutes, other times, I'll just include several small solos all over the song that end up being about 2 minutes. A good rule of thumbe is that a solo should never be any longer than half the length of a song.

But really, as long as you can keep it interesting, then it's okay, if you feel yourself playing the same notes over and over, then it's time to get back to the rest of the song.

I like instrumental sections better than just a "solo." It allows every instrumentalist in a band to show off their virtuosity. General rule for Dream Theater songs is there will be 3-4min set off for instrumental jamming.

Don't try to take back what you said. You said, "this is why we drummers and bassists hate guitarists" By saying this, you have effectively offended over half of the people on Ultimate-GUITAR.

All I can say is listen to many and different styles of music. They all have their own approaches to and attitude on solos. Learn from them. Then you'll know the answer.

...modes and scales are still useless.
