1- Doesn't work properly
2- Generally poor, muffled, just bad
3- Smashed, red-plating to death, silvery getter has turned white.

It will probably have a big black dot on it- like the glass has been burned. I will also not be glowing the ordinary orange which you see on the other valves.
You will just know when one blows as far as sound is concerned...

^ Aye.

Well, some odd glowing isn't unusual, blue is occasionally okay. You just need to tell for yourself really.

Blue- or Purple-plating on a Rectifier tube, however, indicates it's gone bad and should be switched out ASAP.

Yes I'm serious. Granted mine was free. I've retubed and modded some amps for a couple local bands. I don't charge anything, I only ask that they recommend others to me. Ends up, always getting a few bucks thrown my way. Saved a few people from retubing when it was a completely different problem.
