I'm looking to replace my ultra crappy practice amp with a new SS (not interested in tubes due to cost and maintenance required) amp that will be loud enough to not be drowned out in a jam session. Play mostly music in the flavors of metallica and megadeth, and looking for an amp roughly around 300-500 bucks that can deliver some sharp cleans and a nice crunchy distortion. Not looking for a "dream amp" by any means, but something that won't sound like ass . Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks in advance guys.

Oh noes! Every two years I need to change a lightbulb
If you're ADAMANT with ss though, high end Randalls are the way to go I would guess.

Tube matience costs aren't much at all. Most recording muscians might change their Pre-amp tubes once a year, but they last much longer than that. You could easily get away with changing your preamp tubes every 5 years or so. You'll probably never have to change the power tubes unless you blow one. Most people recomend changing tubes every 2-3 years but they will last longer.

Anyways, maybe a Cube 60 if you want to go solid state.

But honestly a B-52 AT Tri-recitfier combo would be better, just make sure you get the fan kit B-52 gives away so it won't overheat. I also think the new models come with a fan installed in there already. You can also get a cabinet later to giver a little more bass and a bigger tone. Ignore the muscian friend reviews, people there don't know ****.

There honestly isn't a lot of maintenance with a tube amp. Anyone who thinks this needs to research more into amps before they even think about buying another one.

I thought the same thing at first.. Read to many horror stories and not enough these amps are amazing... First two amps were SS and was going to go SS on the fourth but decided to research more and im glad i did. Also i have a buddy thats been running on the same tubes in his Marshall for over 14 years and he gigs with it twice a month... ;-) Its really not that big of a hassel.. Also the amp is a JTM30

what a joke. I'm starting to hate all these SS are better then tube threads esp. if it's a stack.

Yes they do, there are tons of tube amps that can get brutals (bogner uberschall, peavey 5150, and loads more...)

I once got shocked by a spider amp.

I got powers like spiderman did, except I model everyone else's powers poorly.

Sure there are. You listed the Uberschall and the 5150. Theres also the Rivera Knuckleheads, Soldano SLO 100's, Diezel's, some Mesa's, VHT Pitbulls, and the JVM is some what heavy. But are any of those in his price range? So what is this young man to do?

Could he perhaps sell his soul to the to get one? That wouldnt work.

Could he put on this face and rob someone? That wouldnt work either.

Perhaps he could become a male escort. But again...

So since he's about not being able to buy a high end all tube amp that he would like, he's settling for something that will get him buy.

TS I would suggest a Randall RG50TC. Its tube and not much over your price range and is a great metal amp.

BTW, like my overuse of smileys?? lol

If you have to buy solid state also check out the Peavey Transtube Series.

Might be an idea to look for a pre facelift bandit, the new facelift models don't have extension speaker outs, so if you ever want to jack into a cab using the combo, you'd have to rewire the speakers, and that could be a bit of a hassle.

assuming i went with the randall rg50tc, would it be worth it to buy an overdrive pedal to get more out of the distortion? i've heard they were useless on SS amps, but since that one is all tube...
#19
You could, but I played one the earlier today and they have a lot of gain and distortion. Its that really typical grind you expect from Randall, only with tube dynamics. But if you feel you would need more distortion you could always check out a Tube Screamer. Those are amazing.

They suck so much balls.

They really don't. They're oh so slightly more complex than most small SS combos, but for a reason.

Generally, if you don't like something and want to tell people that, offering a reason such as "they have cheap speakers", "They don't have a line out", or "they're made in china, and of poor quality". "They suck so much balls" just dosn't help very much.
