I have the Hughes and Kettner Matrix 100 soild state amp head and I like the distortion on it but I want to beef it up and add some more gain, any thoughts on what kind of pedal I should use??

TS, don't get a Tubescreamer because any attempt to "boost" solid state distortion usually results in crap. Likewise don't buy a piece of rubbish like the metal zone, look for a dedicated distortion to use on the clean channel as an alternative, maybe a Rocktron Zombie.

Maybe try a valve preamp pedal such as the H&K Tubeman or one of the damage control pedals. Personally iv never found a distorsion box that takes to SS amps particularly well.
