^ compressors are great for stuff like fingerpicking. they can even out your dynamics just enough to make it sound good without being overdone.

i really like my dynacomp, so i suggest that one. the other thing to try is building an orange squeezer, cause they are supposed to be good as well. link here

I know what you mean, but my 4 knob Keeley has a trim control to eliminate that hiss. The 2 knob version has an internal trim pot as well.

I would say the Boss CS-3. Don't go for the DynaComp, it just muddies your sound, and its hard to dial in. The Boss one acts as both a compressor and a sustainer simultaeously. Cool!!

as with anything, it's just an opinion, it's whatever YOU like.
