I wouldn't say you are failing just that you are rather narrow minded and are really missing out on a lot of good/interesting/intriguing stuff.

Well, technically the present is the past. Because after 1 second, it isn't present anymore. So really, all musicians take influence from the past. Technicalities aside, who cares? People can listen to whatever.

To understand the music of the present, you need to know about music from the past. All modern music draws its influence and ideas from that of the past.
