Start off with the Major Scale. And yes, it's more useful if you learn all the positions.

WRONG

You CAN learn just the one and move it about, but it'll become very stale, very quickly.
#5
the positions are the same if you use the same type of scale,
a\the major scale in the key of C has the same fingering as the major scale in the key of E
the same goes for the minor scales, harmonic minors, blues scales, and penatonics

generally the first position would be the Ionian (which is the major scale). Also, I would advise learning them in a three note per string pattern (although that's just my preference)

Nope, those are the major scale in different keys but they aren't modes. You need to learn the theory behind the major scale as well if you want to understand this.

The major scale is 7 notes...a root note followed by another 6 notes following the pattern of intervals WWHWWWH. If you use C as your root note and follow that pattern of intervals you get C D E F G A B, the C major scale. Now those 7 notes each appear in about a dozen different places on the guitar so you can play that one scale all over the place. Some people use positions to break it down to help navigate around when improvising but the boxes themselves are not the scale.

If you want to learn scales the first thing you need to do is learn the notes on the fretboard, then you need to learn what a scale actually is, then you can start learning scales...learn the major scale first.

Very true i put off learning the frets and i should have not done that. I just wanted to learn shaps thinking that would help and it dont. Steve is 100 % right. Memorise the way a major scale is formed wwhwwwh. THat will tell you every scale you want in major scale form.
Now im on the Major E scale and i saw out load each fret im hitting to help memorise the frets. All over the neck. It takes time but the greats didn tnot learn things in 1 day. There is over 16 different types of scales for each key(abcdefg) so take your time.

good luck
