Excellent ideas Steve.

+1 I like the idea of having the winner run the quicky comp... will make him.her feel more invovled.

As to setting up the team thing, this is what I've thought of.

I feel like we need a minimum of 3 teams in order for everything to work out, I'll explain more in a bit. I also

feel like 3-5 per team will be enough to create a sense of team, and few enough to give us more teams to compete

with. to assign teams: Make a thread having people sign up for teams... but before hand create a document with a

list as such:

3
2
2
1
3
1
3
1
2
etc....

If there are 4 teams, have 1-4 in the chart and whatnot. Then assign each person according to their sign-up slot and

the list.

Everyone seems fairly willing to be honest... so I think as long as there are 3 teams, we can always do team comps

in one round, so everyone will have two options (not voting for their own) and the winner takes the team round

point. I originally thought we could also incorporate this with regular comps, but I've come to the conclusion that

we couldn't control the voting. So, I say we just do team comps: sometimes have collaboration comps where everyone

on the team writes one stanza etc... Other times have each team submit their best piece on the topic or whatever.

you get the idea.

as far as setting up the group pages and electing captains. I say let each team elect a captain... preferably a

person who is on often and is willing to word toward making this work. For the page, let the captain create each

group page. For the main page,if no one else wants to do it, I will.

In my head, it works out so that the comp forum will only be used for voting. Everything else will be contained

within the group page. We will set up comps, keep track of points, etc... there. Each group will use their own page

for collaboration.

Oh, and I think the sign up thread should be on the main page so that more people will see it, instead of being in

the comp page. i think this could be a good way to introduce people to the comps section, because it won't be as

intimidating as wandering in on your own.

I'll be back with more later. I have class now. Mull over this, and let me know what doesn't make sense. this is the second time I typed it (damn you IE) so i may have forgotten something because I am in a rush).

Sorry for WoText.

I really don't know.

I have one main problem really.
votes.

Winter comp had 9 votes. Substract 6 votes (2 teams of 3 writers).
you get 3 votes.

Not enough. And I really don't see this whole team/label thing bringing dozens of people to vote. While all of this is a good idea, and I'd like to give it a go at some point, I still think that right now, contest is not visited regularly enough to hold this.

Honestly.

I ran one close-ish to the team idea, the europe vs. N. america, I think there was an international one a really long time ago. It was kinda a bitch to run and keep track of though.

I won't argue. You know what you are talking about. I love the idea... I love being competitive, which is why I've been so gung-ho. But if you all, (seeing as you and Steve both have reserves) don't think we can pull it off... there is no reason to try something bound to fail.

I want it to happen, but I also understand that sometimes you have to wait for the right conditions. So whatever.

I do want it to happen, too. It's just, I'd like to be convinced that it'll work beforehand. I'm pretty sure you understand.

That was far from a definite no. I'd just want some more suggestions on this.

Sorry to detract from the current course of replies but....

I have posted all the new stuff in the contest forum, new threads, the new information thread (now placed in the announcements spot) and implemented the new suggested rule changes.

If anyone spots a mistake please PM me and I will get it corrected asap.

Thanks Everyone, and enjoy the new season!!!!!!

Also I'd like to add a list of everyones MSN/Aim contacts to the first post. And have it mentioned this is a good place for newcomers to S+L to introduce themselves and post their contact details too...

I realise it is on the profiles but this is for those in S+L. Perhaps someone is looking for some help or just wants to socialise. Anyway yeah.....

If you'd like to have it added just post it here.
Filth, pure filth... That's what you are.

Well, one thing I have to say about this forum is that your local thread title nazi got my thread closed faster than I could read the rules and edit it to make the title comply, which would prevent the forum being cluttered up as easily with dead threads. It seems a bit excessive, is all, and I think a warning would serve first-time offenders better.

Well, I could be a dick and say read the rules first. Another thing is that the mods don't like to just give warnings, because it creates more lenience in the rules in the future.

It's not like getting your thread closed is the end of the world.

Live with it?

So, no idea if this has been tried before... and I don't know whether we can do it without offending new writers... but I think it would be funny to have a thread where everyone can post their very first pieces, if nothing else just for a laugh and to show off how much everyone has grown as a writer. Mostly for laughs though. I know mine was laughable.

I'm afraid doing so though, newbies would come in and see us laughing at "first pieces" and be scared away. Any thoughts?
#65
^I'm not sure if it warrants a new thread, but maybe running a first piece comp. would work.

How do we keep people from cheating in such a comp? Also, I would lose

I dunno, my first writings were on par with AC/DC in terms of literary content.

This could be a nice thing if people agree, we can have a temporary sticky, and have a different piece every couple of days (I don't want anyone's to get ignored), or maybe we'll have a few pieces every week...

A comp is a bad idea, in my opinion, because it does let cheating quite easily.... When it's for fun people will tend to actually show their real early stuff....

Yeah I thought about that. I don't know, we could always just go by everyone's first piece posted in S+L, since that can be checked. Not everyone would have their very first piece around still anyways. Meh.

Oh, a temporary sticky would indeed be nice. I guess this means I'll have to dig up my first piece after all

I think threads get pruned after a while. Last time I checked, I couldn't find my very first thread anymore. Then again, that was ages ago.

You say that like its a good thing, unless you meant Joris wouldn't lose... anyways on to the quote:

I was saying that mine sucked basically,

I wrote about rockin' all night, and partying every day.
#73
if we get a discussion going about how you think others have improved, I can see this going in techniques.

Great idea though. We mods will try and find a solution
#74
I'd enjoy it, and I just found all my first pieces too....so I can easily participate.

How can you have more than one first piece?
#78
Does it really matter if its not a comp? We could just have people post one every three days or so in a sticky. Like we've said... if its a comp, no one will be truthful due to competitiveness. So, we could just draw numbers and throw our piece that was "as far back as we can find." I mean, who cares. I just wanna do it for laughs, so leave it up to the user. Their first piece that wasn't "as a kid" or something.
#79
If we don't make a special thread, I'll probably just post them anyways, as a normal thread. Just for the entertainment value.

Yeah I've been thinking of doing that for a while but I couldn't be fucked to dig up my first piece.. and then Zach ran off to the feedback thread with my idea.
