Today in my Religeous Education class we were discussing morality.

One topic that came up was: is it possible for a person to be completely selfless?

Now an argument supporting that would be a mother who would do anything to make her child happy... but some would argue that she does it to make herself happy because her happiness is reliant on her child's happiness.

Now the more i think about it the more i support the theory that people only do things for themselves.

So pit dwellers, is there an instant where a person is 100% completely selfless?

No. Not even god or jesus. If god was completely selfless, he wouldn't care if we didn't worship him and would just want us to have a good time.

Nope.

There's always gonna be a counter arguement. Eg. a person jumps in front of a bullet for a stranger. Maybe they were trying to save them, or maybe they wanted to die a hero. Who knows.

I've never understood the concept of God. Do not worship anyone else? Do not misuse the name of God? It sounds like a dictatorship.

This, I agree with.

You can't be fully selfless as long as you've got a brain and emotions.

So I hope you're good with surgery and chemicals. I know I haven't succeeded yet.

What drives a person to be completely selfless?

The joy they get from helping people?
A good spot in heaven?
Karma sort of deal?

All of the above seems like they're getting something out of it.

What if the mother was caring for a disabled child? looks pretty selfless to me.. that would be difficult, constantly.

But if they do it for the joy of helping people/to get a good spot in heaven/so good things will happen to them, then they are really doing it for themselves.

Why do people think that its good to be selfless?
The point of life IS to be SELFISH.
You have to make YOU happy.
Why should other people happiness matter to you if its not connected to your own?

no because if you do something selfless you feel good, so you are being selfish because you did a good thing to feel happy

as harsh as this sounds, this is the truth. I think nobody can argue with this.
To the guys who said something about a mother caring for a disabled child: Maybe the thought of being a good person makes her happy? So in the end, she is only working towards her own happiness.
