I'd go with the laney, spiders are really just practice amps

It's never better to stick with the Spider.

The Laney's a superior amp. Given a choice, I'd take it over the VK in a heartbeat. My heart would stop before I chose the Spider of either of them.
You Don't Need a halfstack.

You Don't Need 100W.

The Laney craps all over the Valveking

The Valveking head retails at about £275, while the Laney head goes at £400. The Laney is definitely a superior amp, but price may affect your decision. Bear in mind that doesn't include the cost of a good cab. I've heard bad things about the speakers in Peavey cabs, so you may want to look into other cab options as well if the Peavey is your choice.

The Laney pisses all over the Valveking as well as many other amplifiers. If you're price conscientious, go with the Valveking, it can do everything you want it to do, it's just, the Laney does it, and everything else a lot better.

Have you thought about getting a combo? I've heard great things about the Laney VC50 combo.

If the GH100L's are metal enough for Opeth, they're metal enough for you. 8)

I've heard that the distortion isn't really the tightest ever, but you could always get a tube screamer to tighten up the low end?
Also, I suggest getting a GH50L, if only to make your life a little easier when it comes to getting Power Tube OD.

Actually, the distortion on them is great.

If you want a good example of how they sound, check out some clips of Paul Gilbert. He used the GH series of amps for a very long time.

The Laney absolutely annihilates the both the Valveking and Spider combined. You can get the Laney GH50L head for about £300 off ebay, and you can get a new Framus 2x12 off Thomann for £200. If you have to save for this, do it, for metal you wont need another new amp for maaaaaaaaaany years.

They use the GT8 for distortion.. The laney's are just poweramps..

But I think the Gh50 rocks! And very cheap actually very nice sound/price ratio..
