Just been told that our 'Deadline' for the Music GCSE Solo's and Ensembles is AFTER half term. So not too long (Few weeks at the most). Just looking for tips on any songs for a moderate Novice (My 'best' is probably Chapter Four by A7X,exluding Solo's and slides). Need songs for -BOTH- to be played on either Electric or Acoustic.

-Thanks. Terrodar.

Ensemble - Born to be wild, we got full marks

Solo - Do something that you wouldn't want to hear in a guitar shop (like stairway, sweet child etc etc)
#4

Jordan isn't really in my range. As I said,im a guitar novice.

I made the mistake of doing a much harder piece than was needed for my GCSE piece - Eugene's Trick Bag by Steve Vai.

It meant that when I got to AS and A Level I had used up my best pieces on GCSE
Guitars:
Duesenberg Starplayer TV
Fender Jaguar
Indie PRS Copy
Faith Saturn E/Acoustic
Simon & Patrick SP12
Fender Jazz Bass

You dont need to go outrageous in terms of difficulty, i played nothing else matters by 'tallica and got an A overall. It's when you get to A2 level that you need to pull out the big guns.

For the ensemble, we played paradise city, with an extended improv section to really bolster the marks up.
#12
i did killin in the name for the ensemble - A - i think - it was last year

And i did in your face by bodom for my solo and i got a B

do paranoid or something easy but you can get more marks for performance then difficulty of song, which has less marks
#13
Well for the Solo piece, im prettymuch torn. I mean, most tracks involve a true solo. Whereas im not that adept in Riffs...More of a PowerChord and small riff n00b.
#14
We've already done a practice for the solo (and if we can't make it to the real deal, this gets submitted) and I got 14/15. Not sure what grade that is though.

For the solo, you get marked out of 5 for difficulty, then out of 10 for performance, and I slipped up once so lost a performance mark.

This solo doesn't mean that it has to actually be a solo piece, you could play greenday if you wanted and still get good marks (I know someone who did >_< it just means that you're playing it on your own.

THanks a lot for the advice guys. Keep the song suggestions coming, might actually use some of this Music lesson to try and get the hang of Paranoid or something now.

Remember, you need the sheet music, and to get the best marks, you only need to do a Grade 4 piece.

I'm on Grade 8, but there's no way I would risk my GCSE on that hard a track, so I just performed a Grade 4 piece, and I'm predicted an A.

If you're planning on performing something different, Green Day for example, you need to have the sheet music. This is vital, or else the piece won't be accepted; this is the case at my school.

For my solo I did Nothing Else Matters by Metallica, and for my ensemble we're doing Killer Queen by Queen. 'ts cool.
#22
I guess it's different between schools.
I think to be safe though, get the sheet music, or at least off GP5 as Anooplol suggests.

you guys only got to do 1? im 6 months into my gcse and i have already done 4 solo pieces, and 2 ensembles. I get to pick which ones get sent off.

You should try something impressive, like a classical piece on electric. like rondo all turca or suthing <- I have guitar pro tabs if you want it.
#25
I didn't even do two performances. I did Through the Never by Metallica along to a backing track and got an A*.

Welcome to the Jungle.
We all got full marks (I played the drums) except for the rhythm guitarist.
Easy and fun to play.

Because he's a n00b.
He got 19/20 though.
I could play the guitar to most of that song and I'm a drummer.

It's actually only Grade 3 now.

I just played some stuff out of the Grade 4 rockschool book, and Altitudes by Jason Becker.

Play anything. In Music GCSE, Green Day would get you an A* :|

I think I played Trivium ... those were dark days back then I must say :| I completely made up the solo cause i was **** on guitar back then, and most of the notes werent even in key. I couldnt do any music theory whatsovever either.

Final GCSE Grade.... A* hahaha

In the end, a good grade in Music in a complete doss.

80% of the kids in my class don't even know how to read sheet music and they're predicted B's.

for my ensemble piece i was planning on doing sweet child o' mine, because i already have a drummer and bassist who know it, but then i thought would doing something wayy easier and less risky like Californication still get me a good mark? is it difficult enough?

also, my composition is in G but in the bridge i use and Fmaj7 , would i lose marks for that?

cheers

If you did Californication perfectly you'd get full marks. And aslong as you justify why you've used a Fmaj7 in your brief then no you wouldn't lose marks.
