Honestly, though, the first few that come to mind are:

Radiohead - Talk Show Host
Josh Woodward - I Want to Destroy Something Beautiful
Sentimental Addicts - Death By Light

I would cover:
Half Japanese
The Meat Puppets
Outkast
And Daniel Johnston.

And, I would seriously try to piss off my favorite rappers so they write songs about me. I'm cunning like a fox.

Most of you have got this all wrong. Covering songs which are huge is likely to get fans of the original really pissed at you, and I can guarantee that people would tell you that you had ruined it, unless you changed the style so much that it wasn't really comparable.

That's why I'd mostly cover album tracks or singles by bands that are quite obscure. Like Nirvana did for their acoustic show. They didn't cover Life On Mars or Rebel Rebel, they chose a slightly less well-known Bowie song (Man who sold the world). The Meat Puppets and Vaselines covers were obviously fairly obscure as well. That's how you do things. Covering famous songs works if you never put them on a record I suppose though.

Bearing this in mind, my list would be:
Papercut Skin - The Matches
House Of Wolves - My Chemical Romance
The Small Print - Muse
My Michelle - Guns N Roses
Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge - Nirvana
Paper Wings - Rise Against

I would maybe cover some big songs like Heart Shaped Box, Immigrant Song, or Everlong, but generally, I'd try not to touch classics.
I play by my own rules. And I have one rule; There are no rules... but if there are, they're there to be broken. Even this one.

Fixed.

Seriously, that was the most out of place /thread I've ever seen. A song being amazing before makes it a worse candidate for covering...

All those bands, save maybe the Matches are well known enough that it wouldn't matter if they were singles. The Vaselines were from another country, and never sold many records, and the Meat Puppets never sold many records until after Nirvana had them on.

Ok, way to make my point with Meat Puppets and Vaselines...

Anyhow, more obscure covers:
See These Bones - Nada Surf
Anthropology - Random Hand
Insurance? - The Higher
Surface - Denali
One by One - Miss Conduct
Hypochondriac - Linchpin
Something by Colours Run or Lazlo Bane wouldn't go amiss either.
Happy?

I'd cover some Stiff Little Fingers, Therapy? The Wildhearts, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Misfits.

Stuff like that, cus they influence my own playing style.

I love metal too, but when I actually play and write it's the stuff above that influences that.

I'd be happier if there was a more rocky version of Nina Simone there somewhere.

But then I'd just be ripping off Muse.

And my favourite Nina Simone song (See-Line Woman) got taken and revamped by some whore I saw on Jools Holland (music tv show here in England). I swear she didn't even listen to the lyrics, because her version was called Sealion.

Meh, Muse ripped off Jeff Buckley first, so it's not a big deal. Cover her cover of Here Comes The Sun.

The Vaselines song he did at Unplugged. It's technically a Christian song, the Vaselines covered it and changed some of the lyrics.

If you do a Vaslines song, though.. Do Monsterpussy or Sex Sux.

To the guy above me: If you do Smells Like Teen Spirit, claim that you wrote it before you went on stage.
