I find myself walking in my house and looking at my rack of guitars and my amp and not playing them.

I've lost the magic to play guitar like I use too, and I need inspiration to have me keep playing.

Obviously everyone goes through periods where they lose interested for a while. What keeps me playing is love of music, and the hope that one day I'll be able to write decent material myself that I can be proud of.

I just finished an awesome little jam. I tuned up every guitar while the Super was warming up and then started with the tele with OD. The Ibanez got metalized good and hard followed by crystaline chorusy compressed cleans on the PRS, and finished off with a blues explosion a la pos 2 on my Strat. Killed an hour and made good goddam use of it.

That's what keeps me playing. Try that sometime. Get them all nicely tuned up and give 'er sh!t for an hour and just appreciated the differences in all of your axes.

I'm not sure what keeps me playing..

i just like the look of a guitar and the feel of the smooth buttery frets and I just can't put it down after all of these years. there isn't a day i dont wanna play and i will put in a few hours everyday still....it amazing now that i think about it.

but if i need some inspiration ill just put in my hendrix dvd, or SRV ect. i always pick up my guitar after those guys.

try going to a concert to see your fav. band....im sure it will help inspire you again!

I keep playing because I've become addicted to the groupies...

...and because it's what I do to relax everyday.

I keep playing because of a boiling hatred of everyone's talent and happiness. My guitar and booze are the only thing that keeps me from putting a .45 under my chin.

Maybe you need to just hate people more?

Keep telling yourself that, I did all it got me was in dept.

But saying that I nearly got signed with a band in 2003 but I was not ready and the band split in late 04, but we had a good 5-6 years run at it.
My solo music will be for download soon though, thats the way to go downloads, you don't need some dong manager.

I find inspiration from new bands and new music. Just find what brought u to the beautiful instrument. Jam with friends! thats always so much fun. Especially when one of your buddies is amazing. it gives you competition to be better than him.
just go back to what made it so fun for u. For my it was playing air guitar before i got my first guitar and dreaming of being a rock star one day. everyone has a dream like that.

Ya and if that works go out to the pawn shop and buy a **** guitar. SMASH THE FU.CK OUT OF IT! that always refreshing.

I have a bunch of different people to play with that are all better than me. I practice every night to hopefully get as good as them so that I don't feel like I am the one holding everyone back during jam sessions. Plus I am kind of addicted to it. I used to get home from work and play video games for hours now I get home and play guitar for hours.

I go through those phases, everyone seems to. What keeps me playing is the fact that my life is never where it needs to be, and playing guitar helps to let some of myself out, regardless of skill level or what I can or can't actually play.

This made me laugh.

EDIT: What keeps me playing is just watching/listening to fantastic musicians (not necessarily guitarists) and just getting the motivation to go ahead and make something that sounds good. At the end of the day, thats what music is.

That makes 2 of us bro. Ever since I stopped playing in a band 4 years ago, my chops have gone to hell.

I recently bought a 7-string and I haven't been able to put it down. The wider neck gives my left hand a workout, and the tighter string spacing is tightening up my right hand technique.

Not saying a 7-string is the solution to your problem, but its revitalized my desire to improve myself 10 fold.

I believe I'm a damn good songwriter, good enough to become well known and respected, but I crack ridiculously under pressure, and my technique is still very limited. So basically I need to be good enough technically for anyone to take me seriously. This motivates me to do the boring and repetitive groundwork, and then occasionally I'll have a few days where I'll write a lot of stuff.

I call my inspiration "The Smiless Blacktoooth Grim"

It is the creative side of me.When i pick up a guitar it is like I'm a different person or something.Like I can play for the whole day or because of him.I bet you people think I'm crazy or something lol but it is the truth. My mood just changes becuase of personality trade I call Smiless Blacktooth Grim.

What keeps me playing, hmm...

New patterns, scales, shapes I randomly come across.
Discovering new backing tracks.
The YouTube guitar community are always encouraging.
Lots of different styles I'm interested in.
Composing for my band.
The fact girls love guys with guitars. It ain't even getting old.
#30
yeh i find that from time to time. I just find that I'm not in the mind-set for it, sometimes for weeks.
But I also find that grades keep me interested. They can effectively improve skills without you even realising you're practicing those skills. The earlier ones aren't s appealing as the songs are naff and simple but they get good at about grade 6. I'm referring to the rockschool ones.

I like music, when I'm not playing it I like to listen to it. Except for a period from about 1985 to 1993. Rap and Big Hair Rock and the New Country just about killed my joy in music during that period. For me it was a dark time in Music. I didn't play for about 7-8 years.
Music started picking up for me in the early Ninties and I started playing again. I don't need to be surrounded by good music but I need to hear something worthwhile once in a while to stay motivated.

Learning new things on the instrument, playing how I feel. Also, I gig quite a bit with a jazz ensemble, so playing for an audience, performing, getting money for it. It's quite gratifying.

Sometimes I'll go a few days without even touching my guitar, because briefly I'll become enthralled by composing an orchestral piece.

i find it i havent been playing guitar as much too my friends say i dont play because im depressed

I just love to play guitar. I play it when I'm angry to let off steam (mmm.. metal's good for this). I play it when I'm chillin' (usually play some bluesy improv when I'm in this mood). I practice hard because one day.. I wanna be a guitar virtuoso, able to whip out a beauitiful solo just like that.

Having a rival is pretty fun. It makes you want to get better and better in guitar.

Sounds really gay I know but still...

It's an on and off thing for me anymore. If I'm not in a band, I hardly play at all. Right now I'm trying to get one going but it looks like a bummer already. After looking for 2 months we have a drummer BUT he's 22, lives 30 miles away, doesn't have a drivers license, and we don't have a practice space. :| Two months of my life wasted hunting for a freaking drummer and it turns around and dumps on me....

Yah, well I can do it faster.

well I play because every time I sit down for 2-3hrs with my guitar and play...i just feel so good lol.

i do however have a pretty obsessive personality...and I will never stop at something I love until I am "the best"...which in a musical sense does not exist...so in essence, I will play guitar until the day I die

tho a 7-string may not be the only answer, getting a new toy is ALWAYS fun, and for a lot of people will inspire them to play another 5 years before getting bored.

friend of mine was super good, got in a rut, got a new halfstack and guitar, and hasnt stopped/complained for 3 years.

i know it sounds retarded/gay but sometimes getting a new toy, whether it be a pedal or effects board or something just fun to mess with, will get you back in the groove.

I also think making youtube videos, which is also kind of gay, is fun in its own way. Recording multiple tracks of yourself for rhythm, leads etc.. and splicing them all together, thats so fun.
