so i have this danelectro guitar but smashed it long before I knew what it was. I only broke off the top cap and controls, so I am going to order a block of mahogony for the center block, put a tune-o-matic style bridge on it and route the new top to accept a P-90 just because I have one laying around. I was just wondering what you thought I should order for the top. my options are birdseye maple, bubuinga, rosewood, mahogany, maple, walnut, and zebrawood. Also, how thick should the top be. I was considering somewhere between 1/8" to 1/4".

sorry to keep changing my mind (for the 2 people who read this thread), but I have found a site that sells the original style bridge that this guitar had and a set of lipsticks cheaper than musicians friend charges for 1, so I will put 2 lipsticks in it. Also, since it is semi-hollow, I will put an F-hole in it. Once the wood comes in I will decide what finish to put on it or to paint it.

got the wood in and the rough cuts done, but no camera. I will have one before I do the final cuts. Also got the finish. The parts haven't come yet, but were ordered last week. Pics coming soon.

The pictures are up, but my rotary tool kicked the bucket. So it may be next week before I can get finished, but I will add more pics when the hardware and electronics come in.

wow, it's weird seeing an actual wood Danelectro....

Let us know how it sounds when you finish it. I'm curious how the use of actual wood will affect the tone.

Man I am so jealous, I've wanted one of these guitars for ages, aren't they Silvertones though? I think they're the same company a Danelectro but just a different brand name?

Anyway I'll be watching this thread to the end, should be awesome when it's finished.. Wanna sell it when it's done??
#14
Yes it is actually a silvertone. I may sell it for college money (gotta get pay off a student loan), but not before I mess around with it first. Also, the way I'm doing the electronics is identical to 59-DC, so two lipsticks in series with two concentric pots. Not sure where I will put the pickup selector yet...

Danelectro's about to reissue that type, so look around at some of those reissues for some inspiration if you need it.

All the hardware came today. Hopefully I can finish it up this weekend. Tomorrow I can't work on it. I'm seeing the Foo Fighters. I have the pickups wired (not in the guitar though still have woodwork to do), but I forgot to order a selector switch, so I can't even make sure I wired them correctly (And I'm 94% sure they are right).

I am getting really close to finishing this re-build. I have the wiring done. I just robbed a switch off an epi i hardly play. It doesn't function correctly, but it let me know that my wiring is right. I'm waiting on some glue to dry right now, so I'm eating a baked potatoe. Just gluing, sanding, sanding, finishing, sanding, and finishing left. And wait for glue to dry before I put hardware and strings on.

BTW-The Foo Fighters had an awesome show last night.

I wired the pickups in series. I used original Danelectro Lipsticks. Tone and volume controls for each (Just 2 concentric pots). With a 3-way selector switch. I am actually at work right now, so I can't work on it, but my sister (who is a classic arts major and owes me money) is doing the finish on it. When I left (about 2 hours ago) she was doing great.

Here is a picture of the finish so far. If you can't tell, there is masking tape all over the guitar. What is not tape is purple. The hole in the purple is not a scratch. It is the the hole for the screw that holds the bridge down.

oh wow, that's awesome. Looks very, I dunno, almost Aztec or Incan or something, not something you typically see on a guitar. Looks great so far.

Thanks. My older sister is doing. She is awesome. I'll put the painting up she is gonna do with me, that guitar, and my homemade pedals up when she is done with it. If it snows tommorow, and I don't have to go to work (I love my government job), then I will put the next "color" on. By the way that is a custom made stain. Took forever for me to convince the lady working at Lowes to mix up purple stain. You can't really tell from that picture, but you can still see the wood through the purple. The next "color" is just a dark stain so you can see more of the wood.
I also have the electronics 100% done thanks to SomeoneYouKnew. He has got to be one of the smartest guys on here.

One word: TRON.

And I think it looks . . . well, we'll let Keanu Reeves from Johnny Mnemonic explain:

I am pretty much finished with this project. I have been playing all day. Now I am at work. I will put pics up later this week to let you see how it came out. Despite what some say (including movie stars) I like the finish/design on it. Since it is my guitar, I suppose that's what matters. It is fun to play, and the lipsticks sound good. They are pretty low output, so they won't overdrive my amp very well, so i have to use my tubescreamer.

How the heck did you do that? Didnt it take you a long time?

I'll give you that. It is your guitar, and the only thing that matters is that you like it. Props, dude.

To MXBOY- I (by that I mean my classic arts major older sister) used masking tape to tape off the purple design. Then using a purple stain that took 30 minutes for the Lowes associate to understand I actually wanted a purple stain, I stained the wood with a purple stain. Of course there was sanding and stuff involved to, but thats the jist. It is such a fun guitar to play, but I realized I forgot to order a new nut so the B string has little bit of buzz from the first fret no matter how high the action is. I think I'll buy the re-issue just to compare the sound.

hey, what happened to the blue?

Still, pretty cool, man. Definitely a sort of Aztec, tribal look to it.

and, uh, LOL at the amp...
