Okay, well I have a situation that needs to be dealt with. Laptop (which I don't think I really need anymore) or a guitar (which I need in my opinion). To be concise, my parents think I need a laptop for college but I don't think I do anymore and last night I played this guitar that I REALLY want. You see my parents want me to buy a laptop but a cheap one, like $500 dollars approx., but if I were to get one I would want a better one for like $800-$1000. Do you agree? The guitar will cost me about $500-$600 depending on how well I can haggle.

So, a guitar or a laptop?

If you're serious about going to college, then a laptop is a must. At university mine is in constant use for presentations, typing, band practice and other stuff. At exam time it means I don't have to fight for a computer and I can work as and when I want.

yeah..the laptop would be the responsable choice.

It's ok anyway, just think that you'll have a well payed job in a while, and you'll be able to save up to buy the guitar..maybe even a better one (optimism FTW?)

a college student will need a computer more than a guitar. if it's possible, try talking them into a mac computer. not as many viruses and they're so easy to use. that's what I'm on right now. and, if you want all of your windows programs, just get parallels and you can run windows programs on your mac

Yeah, but I have a computer and it is an old one but I think I could go a little bit longer without a laptop.

^That is the guitar...I really want it. What $500 laptop could compete with that

Always remember: choose the one what will help your progress, not hinder it.

Go for the laptop.

You need a poll, btw.

Well, maybe I should have mentioned I am a music major...

Do you think that $500 dollars is good enough for a respectable laptop though? I always hear, you get crap for that, and that it is best to buy one around the $1000 range.

You can get a decent one for $500 if you're willing to look around.
Trust me, you'll need it.

a laptop would be nice, but I just dragged up my regular pc to uni

don't know what i'd get from carrying around on day and it'd probably only hinder by making me waste time posting on forums via the schools wifi instead of listening to lectures

and as far as school goes, you don't need some fancy laptop. Hell, a 5 year old PC will do internet+word processing+listening to music+watching movies just fine. Even if you're some field of engineering, you're not going to be running any simulations or anything that will slow it down (I mean...we've got matlab and C programming and I do that on my 400mhz box), you can easily record audio on it too as long as you don't want to run a bazillion vst plugins at once, photoshop also works fine as long as you don't want to do huge 5000x5000 things with 4 dozen layers etc....

$500 laptops are fine unless you wanna have Vista or play Crysis or something.

Well, if I got a laptop I would want it to game a bit and like Seljer said, I don't think I need a fancy laptop for school anymore, I've gotten along fine so far. If I were to upgrade I would want something that would be good and justify the purchase, it doesn't have to be great.

just forget about gaming thing, just get a desktop if you want to play crysis
when you start adding 17" displays and big hot video cards and heavey batteries it looses its redeeming laptop qualities

Laptop. You will use your laptop ALOT more for college than you will play your guitar in double the time it takes you to finish college. Plus, a laptop has a huge range of benefits that you can't get from a guitar.

Having a laptop? No. I do quite well with a good ol desktop. People who say they need to use it for school to take notes in class etc. know perfectly well that they can do so with a pen and paper. They just need it to play games and chat on MSN in class.
