For some strange reason, whenever someone asks what me and a friend want to do when we leave school, and we say "Be musicians/guitarists". People laugh. What the hell has happened to the world. If I'm not mistaken, guitarists have always been respected and worshipped in some cases.

We got a chuckle from this guy who originally wanted to be a panel beater but changed his mind and decided to be a chef, wtf?!

So has this/does this ever happen to you?

There's your problem.

Odds of making a living off of playing guitar are low, kinda like saying you wanna play sports professionally.

Well, these days people don't appreciate guitarists like they used to

I'm going to that as well though, become a professional musician, stuff doing anything else because everything else is boring

People don't know what music is anymore, and we as guitarists don't matter.
If you care what people think, you probably got into guitar for the pussy.
Yes, it's happened to all of us.

i think it's because you say "Be musicians/guitarists". thats a kinda funny way to word it. but i totally understand your point.

The guitarists that make it big are worshiped. Many don't and people laugh cause they don't think you'll make it. It happns all the time, I just ignore them.
Do you use a BR-600?
If so, click here to join the group thats made for you!

People laugh because in most cases it's a pretty far fetched idea. The chances of making it as a guitar player are pretty damn slim, they probably know it and are laughing at you. Have you ever laughed at someone who said they wanted to be President? It's the same kind of idea.

That's pretty much it, unless you can play really fast and have the ability to right a good song and have proved it, they'll laugh at you.

Hasnt happened to me.
Most people say sweet, whats your band name, and what not.
Some people ive never met even know my band, so its pretty awesome.
I guess it depends how serious you are about it. If your playing shows every weekened and have flyers for the shows posted around and people see it.
Takes alot of commitment. We have a "Bros before Hoes" policy in our band. It works.

I'm hearing a steady *thump thump* from the people above me and I need some porno grooves to play on my bass to give them some background music. Any ideas?

Because most people who pursue this become failures.

Jimmy Page? Yes. 17-year-old who plays in his bedroom? No.

No. When I tell people I want to be a musician of Classical music, they know that has academic merits.

People almost never make it, but don't let them discourage you. Just try your best and play good music and you could make it.

You mean they've stopped calling the arangment of sounds and silence through time music? What are they calling "music", now? Are they calling paintings music? Are they calling food music? Are they calling poetry music? What is it? I'm alarmed because everyone I've met is very good and identifying what music is.

Or are you just defining music by what you like?

I meant to say that people don't respect music as much anymore. Most people don't fully appreciate music for what it really is unless they have played or written some of their own. They don't appreciate the effort put forth into making it, and don't care when someone has the passion to make their own music. It's easier to troll someone who's doing something you don't fully understand than it is to try to understand it, and that could be why people make fun of TS. That being said, most people do love music, but usually in a fairly limited spectrum, so they assume that they won't like what TS plays (as not everyone likes guitar-driven music).
I worded the original phrase poorly. No need to get so touchy, Madcap. I realize that every genre is music. I don't like country or a lot of rap, but I know that it's music; You don't like metal, but I'm sure you recognize it as music, and so on.

No me and the friend I meantioned are definatley the best guitarists in our grade, possibly the whole school but I'm not too sure on that one. We can shred/pick faster than our music teacher (he's more of an acoustic guy). So it isn't our skill level.
