if you're willing to go second hand, and are extremely lucky, a used japanese copy might come up (e.g. MIJ tokai, edwards, greco, burny, etc. etc.). That's what I'd go for, in your position.
I'm an idiot and I accidentally clicked the "Remove all subscriptions" button. If it seems like I'm ignoring you, I'm not, I'm just no longer subscribed to the thread. If you quote me or do the @user thing at me, hopefully it'll notify me through my notifications and I'll get back to you.

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Presumably because the CCF (Combined Corksniffing Forces) of MLP and Gibson forums would rise up against them, plunging the land into war.

You've covered most of the basses there -- Vintage V99/100 always make my starter (or near) list. The Junior I am mixed about. Wouldn't at that price -- neither one thing or the other. The best guitar under £300 in the UK is the X50 Pro. Total market failure at the original price - hence the massive discount - but clearly better than anything intended for that price range.

Stop showing off and play the music!

^ agreed. of course, it's a totally different style of guitar, so it might be a moot suggestion.

^ i've actually tried that edwards (not the same guitar, but the same model). it's very nice; the problem is it's in switzerland, which isn't part of the EU, which means you'd have to pay customs (around 21%) on top of postage, which could bring it up to close to £500.

Ditto the guitar japan one, you'd also be liable for customs etc.; also ishibashi is a bit cheaper if you'd like to try to import (at least it was a few months back). Problem there is that the pound is falling, so they aren't as good value as they were, say, 3 months ago. when i got mine, you got 238 yen to the pound... now you only get about 210. that's adding about £50 (at least) to the prices...

I've played that bottom tokai (in a different colour) in a local shop (though it may have been an older model). Again, it was very nice. some of the newer tokais use a sandwich construction (i.e. not one piece of wood) though the LP special i tried didn't have it. That one may, I'm not sure. Of course, the second two are quite a bit more than your original budget, if that's a concern.
