Hey guys,

School year is coming to a close and being a senior I am graduating. I am going to Berklee hopefully next year which means I will remain playing guitar, I mean even if I wasn't going I'd still play haha.

Well I got $1500 for a gift and I want a tube combo that I can use in the house/dorm. I'll be gigging with my band aswell but i know each of these can destroy a venue, 50 watts tube, forget about it.

So I was looking at the Engl Screamer 50 and the H&K Switchblade 50. Each are in my price range and each have great reviews and some good videos on youtube.

I have no clue which to get because they are each very distinct but yet exactly what i am looking for.

I play many varieties of music, Stevie Ray, Brian Setzer cleans all the way to Behemoth, Black Dahlia

So I dont think i will ever be able to test either out, I was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with either. Thanks.

Need versatility? Go with the Switchblade. Personally, I'd take the ENGL though. :P:

Yeah I'm looking mostly at versatility, but I still need it to nail each genre.

neither of those are going to be amazing value in the US, i'd wager. that doesn't matter if either does exactly what you want, but if you just want good tone, i'd be looking at bogner, soldano, etc. etc. etc.

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Presumably because the CCF (Combined Corksniffing Forces) of MLP and Gibson forums would rise up against them, plunging the land into war.

if you live in the US then i would say you should ask for a Kalashnikoff assault rifle and about 20,000 rounds, at least 5 years of storable food, a gravity water purifier and some land way out in the middle of nowhere

Huh?

TS. An affordable alternative would be a Spider Valve. Recommending one seems to be in bad taste around here but I think they're pretty great for what they are.

He could get better imo.

You could find a used Mesa/boogie mark IV and 2x12 cab easily for $1500.

^I agree about the Mark IV; that's what I did when I graduated, though I would recommend the combo.

Wait, this is for a dorm? You'll get kicked out after ten minutes if you do so much as take either of those things off standby. Get an attenuator or a smaller amp, would be my thought.

yeah, none of that stuff will work in the dorm, even at a music school. I'd pick up the H&K used and get a little SS amp with a headphone jack for the dorm.

I can play my Mark IV in my dorm quite easily. You have to nudge the volume knob lots to get in between super low and deafeningly loud, but it can be done.

what sort of dorm do you live in, when I was in school you couldn't even play a stereo in the dorm without having the RAs chew you out, of course defferent dorms have different rules, I'd get a SS with a headphone jack just to be on the safe side.

Agreed. I use 50watts tube in my dorm all the time. The key is the knob labeled "volume"
Someones knowledge of guitar companies spelling determines what amps you can own. Really smart people can own things like Framus because they sound like they might be spelled with a "y" but they aren't.

Same here. I use my 60w half stack in my dorm room all the time. And I even turn it up to ~10 o'clock for kicks. And to be quite honest, I'm actually really surprised I haven't received a noise complaint yet. Especially since my roommates like to turn it to insanely deafening volumes.

I get complaints here when I go past 8:30 ... and to make it worse, my amp is only a 15 watt solid state.

Huh?

i recommended a kalashnikoff because you can bury them in mud and cow-crap for 7 years and just rinse it off in a stagnant, leach-, and ameboa-infested pond and it'll still operate as new. and if you have a gravity water PURIFIER (not a filter) you can take that water from the pond and drink it.

If you want versatility go for a Mark IV combo. All these amps will be to loud to play in a dorm though and you would probably want a attenuator.
