So im just wondering, what are some common bad habits beginner guitarists develop? Maybe bad habits you've developed at some point and had to overcome?

I'm asking because im curious and also trying to help out a friend that is just starting to play guitar.

Yeah, I did that for awhile. Also, I had a bad habit of if I couldn't get a part right to a song i would throw my pick and put my guitar down and just walk out of the room...I had anger problems...

god, i have nonguitarist friends who downpick every note playing guitar hero.
being good at both, it bugs the hell out of me.

id avoid that, and as long as its working for you, and youre remaining versatile, anything pretty much goes in guitar.

I never alt pick in guitar hero, and I've beat expert in all 3 of them. I always alt pick on guitar though

I alternate pick on real guitar and down pick on guitar hero.

I would say not using the tips of your fingers, holding the pick awkwardly, not using your 4th finger and having your thumb sticking out way to far above the neck.

not one that i, or most UG'ers agree with, but apparently anchoring is bad. i do it. most people do. and i have not using your pinky on your right hand, not just your left. people, remember that with fingerstyle, you can use all 5 fingers!
#19
Alt-picking with my right hand really fast, and not coordinating it with the left hand. Now my left hand always struggles to keep up, especially when I try to "shred" (or at least make a passable attempt). Downpicking every note isn't all bad...hell, I wish I kept at it, otherwise I would have been able to play Master of Puppets properly in the first place.

Oh, and relying too much on the treble (bridge) pickup.

how much is 15,000 PHP? I didn't know they played guitar in the Phillipines. I thought they played ukelele or something.

Because, of course, we're too far away from places with guitars and all that stuff so we play ukelele...

The only one I can think of is anchoring, which I don't see as a big deal. I'm not out to prove anything to anyone. Oh.. I do have a habit of smacking my headstock into stuff. Aside from that, none that I know of..

Oh, I also have a bad habit of bringing my guitar to work, and not working.

I love you =] I can't say I was very fond of you when we first started talking because you trolled the hell out of my threads, but after talking to you here I've grown very attached to you.

Yeah, write to my fanclub about it, honey.

Anchoring is anchoring your picking hand on the bridge as your play, I've always done, it. Only time I don't is when I strum chords.

Accidently banging your guitar against everything when you're carrying it.
But maybe that's just me.

playing the same pattern in a solo too many times. Not necessarily the same notes just the same pattern.

Wait, do I anchor? I rest the back of my picking hand against the bridge, and leave my other fingers loose.

For some reason, I do the exact opposite. I use my pinky for everything. I just use my pointer and pinky most of the time. Is that bad?

Yeah, that's anchoring. Read the thread I posted (yes, all the way through), and you'll learn more than you ever wanted to know about anchoring.
