I'm making a jeopardy game for my Chem class

I'm almost done but I don't have enough info on Electron Configuration

Anyone help?

the first question is

"What is Electron Configuration"

and the 2nd is

"what are the 3 letters used in electron config"

I just need two more questions

more info please. are you talking about orbitals? what level are you at?

EDIT: what's jeopardy?
I'm an idiot and I accidentally clicked the "Remove all subscriptions" button. If it seems like I'm ignoring you, I'm not, I'm just no longer subscribed to the thread. If you quote me or do the @user thing at me, hopefully it'll notify me through my notifications and I'll get back to you.

"what is wrong with my second question?" is a good start

in all seriousness, check wiki
Get off this damn forum and play your damn guitar.

Electron configurations show the electrons in their lowest energy states in their oribitals.

The second question is worded wrongly.

Electron configurations are written thus:

For Hydrogen 1s1
Helum 1s2
Lithium 1s2 2s1

first letter tells you the level s is an s oribital...

Dude seriously check the science thread.

When 2s2 is formed, the next electron is 2p1

When 3p6 is formed, and 4s2 is full the 3d1 begins.

I cba posting in depth as its in the science thread somewhere... I think.

And you can get electron configs online!

I don't really feel like reading anything, I'm lazy

Well we're working with periodic tables, and talking about the electron configuration

say you're dealing with Magnesium and the electron configuration is [Ne]3s2

it means there are 2 electrons in the S level- if I'm not mistaken, I don't pay attention in there, my teacher isn't all that great, lol

and my second question, I know there are more letters than just S,P & D, there's also F and maybe another one??

EDIT: Jeopardy is a game show in America and it's like "your favorite pudding" "what is banana" and ...yeah

Hydrogen 1s1
Helium 1s2
Lithium 1s2 2s1
Beryllium 1s2 2s2
Boron 1s2 2s2 2p1
Carbon 1s2 2s2 2p2
Nitrogen 1s2 2s2 2p3
Oxygen 1s2 2s2 2p4
Flourine 1s2 2s2 2p5
Neon 1s2 2s2 2p6
Sodium 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1
Magnesium 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2
Aluminium 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p1
Silicon 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p2
Phosphourus 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p3

Chlorine 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p5
Argon 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6

I would do all the d orbitals in the transistion series but Im bored now.

yeah, there's F in the actinides and lanthanides, i think.

theoretically, there are an infinite number of more orbitals, i think, but in any elements thus discovered or synthesised (i think) we've only got as far as F.

the configuration basically refers to how many electrons there are and in which orbitals.

"What is electron configuration?" is not a good question for an answer. It would be hard to give a clue that someone would guess that answer. Ask stuff like "This electron oribital can hold 14 electrons" the answer being "What is f?" I'm a Chem II student, I know all this stuff. YOur questions need to be more specific.

You're right. f is in those two series and is the lagest orbital we know of so far.

We have got theoretical orbitals for n=10, as in they have been figured out but only 7f are known exist... I think I could be wrong on that one.

n=1 s
n=2 p
n=3 d
n=4 f
n=5 g
n=6 h
n= 7 i

(g h i are not the real names but they exist theoretically)

don't worry, we didn't even touch on f-orbitals at undergraduate level university (other than knowing they exist, i think). you'd only really go into that in-depth if you were working with actinides/lanthanides in research, for example.

i think we maybe touched on them slightly in postgrad lectures, though. Of course, needless to say, considering we weren't being examined on it, it had my full attention.

GCSE is teh failz0r.

And they are not true per se they are theoretical boundaries that an electron occupies. Its a probability density map of where an electron is probably spending 95% of its time.

We cant know for sure due to Heisnberg's uncertainty principle.

Are you in Chem I? That's when I learned the 4 of them. s,p,d, and f are the known orbitals. There are others but they are theoretical.

Octet theory only applies to s and p systems (for n=2).

Then for n=3 you have the 18 electron theory (d orbital adds 10 electrons).

We try to get rid of those octet theory things because they are gross over simplifications.

I taught my brother the proper things and the school told him to forget what I told him because what I told him was "too advanced" for him.

He understood it perfectly... Then again he is 14 and I had been talking chemistry and biology to him for years. I like it that he is top of his class for science, but I dont like it that he wont take history. I got an A* at GCSE and a B at A level in it.

Oh well its his life and I ll be there to guide him, not do what my dad did to me and force him down a path to self destruction lol...

I do believe the education system has been dumbed down a fair bit since Ive done GCSE's.
