Opinions? I have both their albums (Crossing the Red Sea and Cast of Thousands), and from what I've heard of them so far, they're pretty bloody excellent. Gary Gilmore's Eyes, New Church and Television's Over are my three favourite songs by them at the minute.

So yeah, opinions?

They're interesting conceptually, but they have about 3 good songs and were too short lived to have any lasting impression.

That's pretty much it.

I like them a lot.

I Surrender is my favorite song of theirs.

Also I'm going to build a time machine so I can go back to 1977 and make kisses with Gaye Advert.

Eh. They aren't horrible. Just kind of 'meh', to me.

Even though pandas are extremely cute, they're not very lovable. I found that out the hard way .

The Adverts are great. I have Crossing the Red Sea but I really want to get Cast of Thousands but I can't find it anywhere. All the songs I have heard from it seem really well written, even more so than their debut which is also great.

The best Adverts song is Love Songs. TV Smith is a great song writer.

He's okay, he's not very prolific.

Good songwriters come up with good tunes as often as rabbits fornicate, that's what separates the men from the boys.

Anyone can write a good song, given a few months.

Good musicians can write a better song, given a few minutes.

I like 'em.

Hooky and fun if a bit underwhelming.

Any addict of the 1st wave of British Punk can appreciate their goodyness.

I don't think they'd impress many people that weren't into the 1st wave thing though.

To anyone reading this thread who has never heard The Adverts, they're way better than anyone is making them sound.

Maybe I only think that because I'm a complete 1st wave addict though.

I think they are one of those bands, like many other 1st wave Uk bands that are only known for a few singles that are featured in the cheap punk comps. Another band like this is Eater. Eater were so good.

Seriously, the Adverts are NOT that good.

They were one of the better UK bands in 1977, but they physically aren't anything special.

Eater are fairly good, especially when you consider that they were a bunch of schoolkids. Very hip, man.

^Yeah Eater are one of my fave Uk punk bands. Considering they were like 15/16 at the time Andy Blade had some talent at singing and writing songs. 'Room for one' is a classic song.

It was also pretty cool of the punk elitists to let them get up onstage, too, because they were taking up gig slots that "real" bands could have.

Gosh, I remember when I was 15/16. I had talent writing songs too.

I asked my dad about what he thought of The Adverts. Turns out he actually managed to do that.

Also, on the topic of Eater...*cough cough*
I only have one song, but I DON'T want any more. Please.

And finally. Can anyone suggest any more good English 77 bands? Who have the same sort of vibe?

Check out the Gorillas, if you can find them.

The singer is called Jesse something, and he's a cross between hendrix and noddy holder. Awesome stuff.

Anything slightly similar to Noddy Holder is easily gonna be fantastic. *looks up*

Try The Flys, despite the rubbish name they are pretty damn good. They sound I bit like the Adverts later sound, but more post-punky. Kinda like Wire. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=136435548 'Love and a molotov cocktail' is a class song.
