The last one was starting to get a little tiresome, so here's a new one, devoted exclusively to the Mancunians and their impressive body of work.

Starter Guide
The Smiths were a singles band, so I'd suggest starting out with Singles. Then get The Queen is Dead to hear the Smiths at their peak as an album band. From there, it's basically whatever, though I strongly suggest Meat is Murder.

First!

Ah, I've always wanted to do that. Anyway, nice opening post. Personally I'd recommend Strangeways after The Queens Is Dead, and then their debut. In fact, I think I'd go for The Queen Is Dead before any singles compilation, too. But that's pretty much how I got into them, so I might be biased, I guess.

What's everyone's current favourite album, then?

That's like, #1 on my list of places in England to visit. After all the typical touristy stuff in the south of course.

Oh yeah, the record sleeve.

I remember when I bought that album. I was with my grandmother and she launched into a tedious lecture about vulgarity and sin and such.

They're one of my favourite bands and I now own all of their discograpy. I'd personally recommend 'Louder Than Bombs' for a first album.

My favourite album is The Queen Is Dead, followed by their debut and then Strangeways, Here We Come. I honestly don't get all the fuss about Meat Is Murder.

My favourite songs at the minute 'Please Please Please...', 'Asleep' and 'Reel Around the Fountain'.

EDIT: Also, I read somewhere that there was some scandle in the British tabloids involving the Smiths, so Joe Dallesandro wouldn't let them use the still for their debut. Morrisey posed and some records were released with his photo, then Dallesandro let them use the image. So the LP sleeves with Morrisey must be worth quite a bit.

That's how I think the story goes anyway.

PS: Most of you guys probably know this, but that's the same guy's crotch on the cover of Sticky Fingers by The Rolling Stones.

Agreed. That's usually how I rank the albums. I also agree with you on Meat Is Muder. It's a good album, but it's far from their best.

I don't know, I've always just felt a deep fondness for Meat. It appeals to me more than Queen, and certainly more than Strangeways (though I love them all).

Haha, that's hilarious. You shuld try buying 'Suede'. That'll certainly get you some suspicious looks thrown at you.

Johnny Marr's various weird noises in How Soon Is Now? came pretty high in Guitarist's list of the Top 50 Guitar Tones ever, which was nice.

The Smiths are one of my favourite bands ever, and Johnny Marr is one of my favourite guitarists ever, which is why he's graced my avatar since I joined this site.

I love the smiths more than my family

my favorite song is probly death of a disco dancer or youve got everything now or what difference does it make? or panic or the headmaster ritual or the boy with the thorn in his side or a rush and a push and the land is ours

best album is the smiths, then strangeways here we come

I got Strangeways in vinyl

the bad thing is that, noone in america (that I know...) cares

Psh, I regularly wear that album cover emblazened on my chest; it's one of my oldest and trustiest t-shirts.

I've really been digging Moz's solo stuff as of late.

I don't really see the Smiths as a single band, they released four great albums. I think for me it goes The Queen is Dead>Louder Than Bombs>The Smiths>Meat is Murder>Strangeways, my favorite song is Asleep.

Louder Than Bombs isn't an ablum as such, though. It's a singles compilation.

Also, somebody should start a Smiths group.

I quite like the smiths, although i think morrissey's voice and lyrics do sometimes let down the bad somewhat.

I'm not denying that he writes some interestin material. It's just a bit hit and miss is all.

and when he misses, it's painful.

Absolutely terrific band.

I wasn't really into them (Mr. M's voice never really appealed to me) but someone lent me their greatest hits and I think it was the next day that I went out and bought all their albums. They pull you in like a very bad man and do lovely things to you.

I got into them through "The Queen Is Dead", although I used to get a headache after listening to Morriseys voice for long periods of time.

Just got The Smiths though. Nice album, even if it has a dull track or two.
