Our other guitarist recently bought a 1969 Earth G2000 Head, however we do not know the ohms rating of the head, its not marked. We figure its 8 ohms(another musican in town told us he thinks its 8 ohms.) but it could be 4. We need to figure this out be for something messes up.

Please if its only a guess let me know what you think.

Get a cab for isnt a problem, we have both 8 and 4 ohm cabs.

thanks.

Well you can use a multimeter and test it, however you need to do it quickly. If you turn on the head and test the speaker cable, then turn it off. You don't want to run a head without a cabinet very long.

Ehhhhh. Thats kind of a effy way of going at it, but good idea. Whats going to go down if we are actully using the wrong ohms cab?

Use an 8-ohm cab. Won't hurt a 4-ohm amp.

dont you have to run to 8 ohms to match a 4 ohm, two 16s to match an 8?

Umm, no. You don't test ohms under power. The circuit needs to be dead in order to test resistance. Amps and volts are tested powered up, never ohms.

so test it off?
gah i wish everything was just one ohm rating. so much easyer that way.(except bass 2 ohms for that.)

Since it's the amp circuits that determine what the output ohm rating of the amp will be, trying to test the thing powered up will only fry your meter, or blow a fuse in it if it's got protection. Safest bet is to use the 8 ohm cab with it. No harm no foul that way. Risky using the 4 ohm cab if it's an 8 ohm amp as the lower resistance of the cab will allow an excessive amount of amps to flow out of the amp to the cab. Amperage flow is what generates heat. Think of it as a tetter totter. As resistance goes up, current(amps) goes down and vice-versa. Want to blow a 8 ohm amp sometime? Crank it up with a 2 ohm bass cab hooked up to it. You'll let the smoke out in a hurry.

haha, ok. so were safe no matter what with an 8 ohm cab?

Im running a Carvin V3 so it doesnt matter what cab i use. Ohms can be chosen.
