You learn to recognize the different tones. Fairly straightforward, really.

In your case, you could probably just learn E and tune the rest by natural harmonics.
#5
You can do it if you have perfect pitch.

Or you can take a tuner and find something in your room/studio that makes an e or any other note really and tune from there from now on.
You could try purchasing a tuning fork.

When I first started out, I used the opening measures of "Sweet Child O' Mine."

How long have you been playing? I was only able to tune unaided after a couple of years.

well, I can get kinda close to e, and then I tune the rest accordingly.

I only have to do it every once in a while, most of the time I have my korg tuner or my ME-50 with the built in tuner with me.

You have to train your ears. Most people believe that perfect pitch is a myth and is impossible, including myself. I believe in relative pitch though. You pretty much just have to learn your pitches, and if you dont have at least one string in tune, you are pretty much screwed.
#12
I can kinda unaided and I don't own a tuner still all my guitars are in tune it just takes memory and really you just need to memorize the low E then you can tune the others. Ateast thats how I do it but I also use "Enter Sandman" when my strings just dont sound right and thats how it goes for me

Actually, my friend was either born with, or developed perfect pitch.
He can identify any chord, note or scale

i use the harmonic thing. 5/7. 5/7. 5/7. 4/5. 5/7. if you know what i mean. its not 100% accurate but you tune relative to all your strings so it sounds ok
#16
Comes with time really, you will learn what different notes and chords are supposed to sound like and you will pick it up. I start from the bottom string, play abit of a song that uses that string and tune it up to what it sounds like on the song, then when i know that string is in tune i work my way up, play chords and tune them to what they are supposed to sound like.

Whenever I try to tune by ear, I just twist the E-string tuner up and down until I find a place that I like. Then, I tune the rest using the 5th fret method. Only once has it came out in perfect E tuning. It almost always comes out perfect 1/2 step down for some reason

i play an Em chord, and if it doesn't sound right, I know my guitar is out of tune.
I usually fix it from there, get the low E set up, and go harmonics from there.
And to RedSox, a friend of mine has perfect pitch, so it actually does exist... he certainly proved me wrong

i just do it now. it comes with time. its not like i sat down one day and tried to memorize the pitch and crap of every string. i just know what they are sound like exactly now and can do it from ear.

When I first got it, I actually did it to 1/2 step down too.

Why 5th fret? Natural harmonics are much more accurate, IMO.

Because it's what I trained my ear to do originally.

But, I intonate my guitar well, and it comes up perfect on the chromatic tuner the way I do it, so good enough for the girls I go with.

I just do it.

I pretty much just remembered what each note sounded like. I can usually get about 10 cents of the target note. I'll just play different intervals and if they sound wrong I'll retune it. If I get really lazy though I'll do the 5/7 harmonic or 5th fret technique.
#24
I'm pretty naturally able to get it quite close to perfect, don't know why either

Without perfect pitch you need at least one reference note so you can relative tune all the strings from that note.
#29
i can recognize an Eb (which is what I tune too) well enough to just do it, but I only tune by ear if I'm just playing by myself in a band situation I always use a tuner so it's more accurate.

i can tell if it's even a little out of tune, but i cant tune it just by ear
Looks like someone woke up on the wrong side of the cake this morning!

yeah, that's an inside joke. i made it different colors and sizes to be obnoxious...

Usually i put it on clean and play and open E and try to match it with "Nothing Else Matters" then do the 5 trick. Thats if im in standard tuning. If i do a dropped tuning i use the 7 trick.
#34
It's not that hard if you do it with harmonics and octaves. It's better to avoid tuning with fretted notes though, because the pitches can vary more then.

Why do you never see anyone with 'perfect pitch', it's always someones 'friend of a friend of a friend of a cousin's friend'? I'm not quite sure I belive in absolute perfect pitch, maybe a sharpend relative pitch enough where it's close to perfect. But perfect, I have my doubts.
#36
Lmao wow this makes no sense to me. I was able to easily tune (without tuner) before even a year of playing guitar...how come its taking people over 2 years .

After you get the low E string.... It's just 5 5 5 4 5.

I'm not gonna explain it. Google is your friend.

on an electric it'll probably still be out of tune (on an acoustic too, but not as much), because the note changes slightly with varying pressure. Harmonics are your friend.
