If you want to be legit, you'll need a trading license from your government etc, and this obviously varies from country to country.

You'll need to be able to make copies - you can pay to get this done, which yields good resultsand works out about $1 a unit if you order 500 or so, which includes artwork etc - or just burn CDR's, which is more expensive if you want to make booklets et al.

You'll need to record said bands, either DIY, or you can find local colleges/universities that do studio recording courses, as these will gladly record your bands for free.

You'll need a way to sell them, at shows etc, perhaps on the internet if you're into that sort of thing.

yeah basically. And you don't actually absolutely need any recording experience. Studios have in house engineers that can work all of that end for you. Just costs more money.

In the end, it all comes down to money and the ability to get it. The hardest part of DIY releases is figuring out how to sell them.

CBGB wants to be famous like the others such as Green Day and Offspring. They don't want to be a underground punk band.

Correct. You'll need a visionary to tell the engineers what you're trying to create, but that's not an unacquirable skill per se, at least one person in each band will be subjective and know what they want to achieve, even if they don't have the experience to oversee it.

In fact, I'm thinking of making a career as a freelance preproducer. I'll work with bands to shape them, and help in the studio for pretty cheap.

Also correct, it's the one part of the label process that can't automate itself, it's the part that requires work.

Since the industry is shifting back to live music, shows are the obvious place to shift units, along with other merchandise.

Along with this, you'll have to showcase your group extremely well to convince people to buy a record, no matter how cheap.

While giving out cd's is punk rock, it's a very bad way to rake in profit, and will devalue the importance of your demo/ep/album and possibly demote it to teacoster.

I bet it'd be fun to be your own record company. And ****, what if somehow you blow the **** up and everyone likes you, you're gonna have a lot of money.

And what does money bring you? More musics.

And I was told that if you go to record, you have to know what you're doing and be good at it. Because if you're not, then you're just gonna do it over and waste time.

Haha, so would you guys be willing to help us pay for the pressing or distro? We'd put your logo/whatever on it. Shits expensive, so we wanna see if anyone can help us out before we go putting our life savings into it.

I don't know. I mean, I'd love to, but I never have any money...I'll put in whatever whenever I make some sales (I haven't made any in a while).

I guess just message me on MyFace, I'm scayed of getting banned or something for all the unrelenting spam I post

Oh yeah, and it's actually not "you guys", it's just me.

Would you like to partner up with Flaming Chainsaws, so we both get double publicity and stuff? I need some sales, and I imagine you'd like to get started or something...

Nick BTW postage to the states now is a problem. UPS just got rid of their 'ground postal' service which most DIY labels used so their is gonna be a huge drop in US/Singapore (? cant remember where you live sorry.)

My beef with indie record labels is that they like to play majors, because they have a very limited budget and are only interested in the media that will recoup the most profit.

I think that bands should put out their own stuff, and not intervene with others. Sure, it's cool, but if you have a say in what bands do, it's not their artistic statement.

That's just my view though, it's also pretty cool to invest in the scene, so to speak.

I just added all those bands and told them I'd be happy to "sign" them and stuff. Hopefully a few will go for it... What do you mean open a distro for my bands? I don't have bands yet, but if you're opening a DIY thing and you make a MyFace for it, add me.

Yeah, just go to http://www.myspace.com/flamingchainsawsthingy (hopefully I'll get the time to change the url soon, I hate "thingy")
