Ok, so I've been trying to learn a new song. Heather's Song by Andy Mckee. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=bKtadARBiYY

Now, I was trying to learn the piece by ear, but I failed miserably, so I bought the tabs online. I just practiced for 40 minutes straight and can barely get the first two bars of melody down at 30 bpm when it's supposed to be played at 120 bpm.

Now for my question... Is it weird that I can barely play it BUT AM LOVING EVERY SINGLE SECOND OF IT?!?!?!?! Seriously, this has never happened to me. I enjoy practicing this song because it's so challenging. I usually can't stand practicing anything at all. I was forced to learn piano when I was young and hated every moment of it. I play clarinet for my highschool senior band, but I don't practice even though it's worth marks.

Is there something horribly wrong with me? I can barely play it, but I enjoy this painfully harsh process. I feel weird.

All of Andy's songs are fun to learn.

I just finished learning Dreamcatcher.. and that was fun..

now I'm learning For My Father and its really fun, but kinda hard.

I've only been playing for about 9 months. This song is FREAKING HARD. ahhhhhh.

actually, For My Father seems like a beautiful song that I would love to learn as well.

i've been there, learning rylynn, i can play like the first 10 seconds haha but i love it

Andy Mckee is awsome.
I really want to learn his cover of Africa, and of course, For My Father.

On topic: After only 9 months of guitar, I would say you're biting off more than you can chew. Of course, you've already got prior music experience, and everyone develops at their own pace, but I know that I could have never played this song with only 9 months of playing.

The exact same happens to me, as I've been practicing recuerdos de la alhambra lately.

It's a pretty damn challenging piece for someone with no formal training whatsoever, and even though I've been fingerpicking for nearly 5 years, my 3-finger tremolo technique is still very rough and poor, yet I enjoy every second of practicing the piece.

Can't get enough of it. I think it adds to your drive to try and take your playing to the next level.

You practise the song from the sheet music, listen to the piece, watch video performances... It just makes you want to play until your fingers bleed

Better to start out with For My Father. I'm actually still tinkering with that one after a few months. I just don't have the time to sit down and dissect it.

I think the reason you want to play it so bad is because you know you'll get so much ass if you play it for a girl named Heather.
Sincerely, Chad.

haha, i think i probably am biting off more than i can chew. unfortunately, the set of tabs i bought doesn't include for my father. the only other song that i could learn is drifting or when she cries.

I think it'll probably take me a heck of a long time, but i think i can learn it even though i've only been playing 9 months. I learn really fast because i played piano, drums and bass before starting guitar.

Ok this is kinda weird to say, and kinda off topic but.... you sound a lot like me. I've been playing guitar for almost a year, I play clarinet for school, i don't practice my clarinet as much as i should, mainly cause its more fun to play guitar. And i love andy mckee. I really want to learn Heather's Song also. where did you find the tabs?

haha, nice! I bought them off Andy's record label. CandyRat Records. go to candyrat.com and then click artists then andy mckee. scroll a bit down to tab set 1. It's about $5 a song with a download of the song, guitar tablature, standard notation and a readme file of a tuning list of most of his songs.

I think it was a good investment. It's kept me entertained for a few hours already(i've been busy with school recently. grade 12 is a killer) and I'm pretty sure it's going to make me into a better guitar player, so it's all good.

I'm able to play about 2 pages of 'For my father' - its not really that hard if you take it slow and a bit at a time. How ever if you start to learn any of his songs I get really obssesed with them and end up trying to play them for hours on end. The only problem with for my father is that if you tell someone that doesn't play guitar you've been practising this song for hours and its really hard it can be quite disapointing for them but who really cares... play it for yourself. the very fist part of drifting is easy until he starts playing notes with his right hand (I was going to say tapping but people would think I meant when he hits the guitar).
Call me Duncan.

Nearly always have D'addario EXL110 strings instock - just ask!

Custom made guitar slides available - choose the glass, length etc.. Engraving availible. PM or email for more info.
