I am trying very hard to make up a harmony part for a song that people will drool over. Yet this has proved rather difficult. What I'm looking to create is a harmony solo like that in Aesthetics of Hate (Machine Head if you didn't know which you should), Endless Sacrifice (Dream Theater) and like All that remains or Avenged Sevenfold type stuff. I don't want somone to make one up for me but i could use some pointers on what scales and runs sound good together and any other helping tips you can think of.

Cheers.

Well you named some songs and bands so why not look what intervals/scales etc. they used?

Just solo around in melodic minor, and harmonize 3rds. Sounds great always.

Dumb question: Are you doing it right, or just playing the same 5 frets up?

What exactly would doing it right entail?

I know what he meant

I used to get confused about what an interval actually meant; I thought a fifth was five frets along, rather than the fifth tone in the scale.

stop trying to write one and just improvise for a bit
you'll get something and it will save you from getting pissed off

Diatonic harmony, or harmonizing with the same thing transposed up a 5th (for example)?

Or counterpoint harmony? If you don't know what that is, listen to any queen song, mainly The Millionaire Waltz, Bicycle Race, pretty much anything from A Day at the Races. That's the hardest type, but it's awesome.

Avenged sevenfold has some great harmonies. Especially in the intros to some of there songs. Look into what they use.
