I heard someone say metal is dead...I told my friend that he said. "It's because of glam rock that people thought they were metal and had big hair" i was like wtf...So what reasons are there that metal is dead???

Metal will never die, silly.
It all makes sense
We're capable of beauty
Through sounds that make on cringe
The dogs only hear us now

It's dead?!

"metal is dead" basically means that it's not mainstream anymore. Is that so bad?

Metal is thriving, just look at Linkin Park.

This is exactly why metal is dead.

And let's be fair: Grunge held a shotgun to the head of metal and blew it wide open. Quite ironic, really.

I'm not saying it isn't. I'm just saying that the phrase "(insert genre here) is dead" means that it's not mainstream.

I was joking.

Metal is fine.

It's.... not? If that's not a good enough reason, then I dunno what is. TS I think your friend is thinking about hair metal, which isn't really metal, it's much closer to mainstream hard rock.

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

I guessed you were, but I still stand by my point. Metal was at its best with early-era thrash and the hair metal/glam rock of the 80s.

I suppose it's mainly opinion, and my opinion is that metal is dead.

It is mainstream; probably more than ever (although this is on a different line to your point as expressed above)
Magazines like Kerrang and Metal Hammer have a huge circulation now; as do music channels such as Kerrang and Scuzz (UK markets) and the advent of social networking sites were bands can set up a profile as soon as they decide to be a band means that there's alot of stuff out there now which waters it down

Metal being dead is a very subjective question. Are there alot more bands that can be viewed as terrible (from my perspective, which is pretty hard to please now) but that's just from new technology. It's imossible to compare the music industry and climates to how it was 20 or 30 years ago when bands had to work really hard to get succesful and airplay/deals; it's just not like that for alot of bands around now.

This could go on for ages about the different factors but I wouldn't say metal is dead, we're just having alot more material being added into the mixing pot watering it down, meaning that everyone can have a shot at a slice of metal pie, whether their worthy of it is a bit different

Yeah, Trash Metal and bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest etc aren't real metal

It's just all of this crap you hear these days in the 'mainstream' that makes people think metal is dead.
I shall call it PopMetal.

Fact is, it's not. Just look somewhere else other than magazines and TV.
Just because Kerrang or Skuzz shows you a band it doesn't mean they are the only thing out. They're just the 'in thing' at the moment to these people who enjoy crap bands such as Trivium.

I have only one question. Why the hell do stores like HMV put Green Day in the Metal section?

It's coming back:

Children of Bodom - New album out soon
Trivium - Touring world wide
Bullet for my Valentine - New album is very good and topping charts
Dragonforce (yes I know) - How many people bought GH3? Exactly

Yes this might not be "metal" for some people but it's as close as we've gotten so far.
#32
If it was gone and coming back it would be because Testament have an album coming out this year.
And yeah, Children of Bodom too.

As for Bullet for My Valentine, Trivium and Dragonforce...no comment.

I hate to jump on a fellow UGer but I sort of agree, none of those bands are metal imho.

Let's not get started on that though.

Sure, all that sh*t they play on headbanger's ball might be dying, but stuff like symphonic/ power metal is still thriving, and growing bigger as we speak
