what effect would this have on the sound of it?
if i coat the back with PU but leave the factory finish on top?
or better yet kill off the factory finish?

someone told me that this would kill my tone, opinions?

Oh well, now the empty shell of what used to be chocolaty goodness can contain a tasty guitar circuit.

You probably wouldn't be able to hear much of a difference unless your finish is very thin and the finish already on there is very thick.

i guess i asked it wrong

the top has the factory finish on it
the back was sanded off at some point and now theres acrylic paint on it, but i need to put something on it to preserve it.
i have tons of PU here at the house so i figure why not?

The top will probably have polyurethane on it, if not polyester. The fact that it's a common guitar finish should tell you enough.
