negative battery terminal is always connected to ground (unless dealing with some types vintage equipment).

No...

Depends on what semiconductors your using.... There are lots of pedals that are around today that use PNP transistors and have positive ground. I think I even remember seeing a NPN use positive ground.

im new to electronics so my question is, in this diagram what does the negative terminal of the battery connect to?

The negative terminal of the battery connects to the ground of the circuit.

but before you connect it, it's advised (or advise) to connect the negative of the source to the ring of your input/output jack, so it won't be connected all the time. that would mean your battery will die in probably about 24 hours.

The negative of the battery eventually finds itself to the ground of that circuit.

But that design looks shady to me.
With the gain control at minimum, that thing will present a very low impedance
to the guitar. Even at max, it's low.
Looks like a recipe for mud, imho.

Could probably make it less muddy if you lower the value of the coupling caps. Sound feasible?
