Hmm I've been wondering this for a long time and didn't come to round to asking anyone, well I have no idea what the hell a 'Power Amp' ,'Pre Amp' and all the other stuff that falls into thatg catagory is.

I actually have tried looking it up but it was pretty much gibberish and complicated to me. Could anybody please explain to me in simple terms what a power amp, pre amp is and where does an fx loop come into this?

Thanks

Ok, this is simple. The power amp is just what it states, it's amplifies the signal. the preamp is all of your settings. A power amp tyically has a master volume knob and that's it. The preamp has all the other stuff like clean channel, diry channel, reverb, stuff like that. The preamp contains no power section, so you cannot plug your preamp into a cabinet and expect sound. Conversely, the power amp just amplifies the raw signal. The FX loop is part of the preamp. It's where you plug all your stomp boxes into.

Preamp - Conditions the sound (EQ, Distortion, Voicing)
Power Amp - Makes the sound louder, loud enough to be sent to speakers.

The Effects Loop comes between this. You can add Modulation/Reverberation effects here.

At least, that's what I understand them to be.

...for the gigs im going to be playing its going to be 60% tone and 40% stage look, and I'd like the look of my rig to be able to back up its sound.

No one reads them. How many "Which Amp" threads are started each day?
