if you don't feel confident about your technique at this point, then fast rhythms might be hard. If you're talking about metal, then rolling open dropped D power chords is pretty key.
other than that, developing the ability to play fast is just a matter of practice.

Copy everything that Jon Schaffer from Iced Earth and Spike Cassidy from DRI do, you'll be in the ballpark.

Just keep on practicing. You might try learning "Master of Puppets" by Metallica, most of it has to be consistently down-picked, so that should help.
