In about an hour i'm going down to the local guitar shop with the other guitarist in my band and spending his hard earned cash.
He has been playing on a ****ty squier for about a year and needs an upgrade. We sold his squier and amp for $350 so now he has $2350 (aus). We are fine with which guitar to get him, it's the amp we need help with.
The 2 amps i was stuck between are:

or the Randall RG50TC (sorry no link)

The amp needs to be able to do cleans as well as metal, if he goes with the laney i'm expecting that a pedal with also have to be on the cards to get the heavier stuff out of it. One more thing, which Laney is better the LC series or the VC series.

If anyone as any advice it would be appreciated,

Both amps are pretty good. The Laney will excell playing cleans and light-medium overdrive. The Randall will play metal very well but I don't know about how the cleans are. I bet they are not bad. I say go with the Randall since you need a metal sound. You won't get one out of the Laney.

Ah yes, you have a condition that many guys live with and are affected by everyday. It's called a penis.

I don't like the Randall at all, even for metal. Its very fuzzy sounding.

Laney VC30 will do up to Guns N Roses without a pedal. Add an overdrive and you'll probably hit older Metallica. Anything heavier you'll want a distortion pedal because the amps isn't voiced for that kind of thing.

If you have enough money a Laney VC30 112 (not 210) and a decent distortion like a Blackstar HT DistX would cover all bases extremely well.

I bet the amps overdrive combined with the pedal can get pretty heavy. Either that or just get the Randall.
