I'm saving up some cash to buy a new electric guitar in the intermediate-level range. I don't want something that's going to sound awful no matter what and I don't want something that will crap out easily. Something reasonably priced, too. Any suggestions?

Indeed, you are going to regret asking. Read closer and you'll notice the "don't"s.

sorry. i misread it as you wanted a crap guitar that i assumed you wanted to break.

What kind of music do you like to play? Favorite bands? Price range? Any specific features your looking for?

I like to play metal. Favorite bands... All That Remains, Acacia Strain, Lamb of God, Unearth. No real specific features, as long as its decent. I have about $250 saved right now so somewhere around $400-$700.

I'll also need an amp, distortion pedal, and wires. Guitar is first and foremost, though.

The amp is more important to your sound than the guitar. Is this your first setup? You might find a used Peavey 5150 in that price range if you're lucky with money left over for a cheap-ish guitar.

To be quite honest, the amp should really get some consideration as it's going to be the biggest factor in creating the tone you want. Even a $1000 guitar isn't going to sound much better than a $200 guitar if the amp is crap.

But, if you're still going to look at a guitar first and foremost, I'm especially partial to Schecter guitars. You can get really nice ones that can do what you want even at the low end of your price point (http://www.guitarcenter.com/Schecter-Gryphon-Limited-Edition-Flametop-Electric-Guitar-102682200-i1168520.gc ), middle (http://www.guitarcenter.com/Schecter-C-1-Blackjack-Electric-Guitar-102545498-i1170760.gc ), to one of my favorite guitars at your high price point (http://www.guitarcenter.com/Schecter-C-1-Hellraiser-Electric-Guitar-103111720-i1147999.gc and the new 2008 http://www.guitarcenter.com/Schecter-C-1-BlackJack-ATX-Electric-Guitar-515764-i1386631.gc ).

Better than hooked on crack, I suppose. I'd rather know my kids are safe at home beating their meat than out in the world robbing old women for their crack fix.

This is UG, we love Schecters and Ibanez and Jacksons, we hate Deans and BCR's, we hate Marshall MG's, and everyone needs a new amp.

Look at some Jacksons. I believe you can get an RR3 or KE3 at price. Even a DK2M. I can't be arsed to post links though.
Bands to see before I die:
Iron Maiden
Foo Fighters
Megadeth
Reel Big Fish
Rush
Streetlight Manifesto

Gear:
Epi LP Standard
Washburn Strat
Line 6 Spider (Yes, I know it's bad)

GAS:
Ibanez RG3570Z
Digitech Whammy

+1 to the Schecters. They make AMAZING guitars especially for the price. Their flagship guitars go for a fraction of most companies.
