i've been learning finger picking and i wondered if anyone had any ideas of how to put it into a rock song

Most fingerpicking is going be be acoustic or at least clean, so you probably won't get that nasty rock sound from it. You could try using it during an acoustic/soft interlude.

Another option would be to play someting heavy with power chords, such as D5 Bb5 C5 D5, and they fingerpick the full chords on another guitar, Dm Bb C Dm. Additionally, you can add in all kinds of extensions, so you could play something like Dm9 Bbmaj7 C6 Dmadd4 over top as well (mind you, I picked random chords and I don't know how that specific progression will sound).

You will have to mute like crazy, as you usually cannot let two notes ring, as they will sound very dissonant with distortion. Other than muting, just do the same thing as with clean playing.
