I've been "playing" guitar for a few years. No lessons, not much
live guidance at all. I mostly fool around with chords on my acoustic.
There is a lot of stuff I have never attempted to really learn on my own
because I don't want to learn it the wrong way. One of those things
is soloing. Where I get stuck is when it comes to changing positions, and what
finger goes where in that new position. The other thing is when the next note
I need to play has to be to be fretted on the same fret I am already on, but
on an adjacent string.

(in this tab, for example, there you have to hammer-on the 7th fret of
the E string, followed immediately by playing the A string on the 7th
fret....do you hop over quickly with the same fretting finger? Leave it
on the E string an flatten it down so it hits the A as well....or use a different
finger?)

If someone could take the time to code eash of these notes with the proper
finger above each (I,M,R,P), that would help a lot. I appreciate any effort, but
I'd prefer help from experienced players, rather than guesses.

Thank you. (by the way, the song is "Hey", by the Pixies)

i don't think that you should be worrying about incorrect technique on a Pixies solo. I love the Pixies, but their guitar player wasn't that technically skilled. Don't worry about it.

Believe it or not, there is no right or wrong way...do what is best for you. I would flatten my ring finger and roll it down to the A string, but that doesn't make it the "right" way.

The technical prowess of the Pixies guitarist is beside the point.

I was just using it as an example.

just watch a video of them live and try and get it from that, is the other thing i suggest.

That tends to make me even more confused.

Do some fingering arpeggios and you will learn the trick if you haven't already.
Then it should come to you quite easily how to do it.
That's what I would do, just my opinion.
