well, aside from the one pickup vs. two pickup thing, yeah, they are.

Esquire has three settings: one that's the same as a tele bridge pickup, one that cuts the treble on the signal (makes it sound kinda like a bass), and one that bypasses the tone control and sends the signal straight to the amp (Tele on steroids, basically).

So, um, there are indeed some tonal differences. Esquire's more limited in its sounds, but you get some sounds a Tele can't get.

I'd get the Esquire, personally. But that's really due to the Syd Barrett connection...

And vise versa, but I bet you I can get those by-passed tone control and trebble cut sounds out of my tele with a 5 way switch and some crafting wiring.
