Hypothetical:

It's Wednesday.

Someone says to you:

"Let's hang out next Friday."

Are they talking about the Friday of this week or the Friday of next week?

Edit: I ask this due to an argument two of my friends are having. I, like most of you and most the world, think this means the Friday of next week. That is, after all, why the saying "Next Friday" was created. He just cant get it through his skull and thinks it means the very next Friday to come.

Next week

If they wanted to talk about two days away they should say, "let's hang out on friday" or "this friday"

Next week. If they say "this friday" they mean the friday of this week. Though people tend to not be aware of what they say sometimes

Ask which day they meant?

the one next week. if it was wednesday, and i wanted to do something on friday, i would say "do you want to do something friday?" not "next friday."

Next friday = The next friday that will take place.
It's not correct as in how people look at it, but that makes alot more sense in reality.

that's what i Usually go by, if I dont ask, which I usually do.

I like you too!

Sorry I would take it to mean the latter, meaning the Friday of next week....

"Next Friday" means the Friday of next week. "This Friday" means the Friday of this week. This is no complicated stuff.

what's the point in being "philiosophical"?

Interesting question...
