Im really confused at the moment. My mum just came into my room and had a huge go at me saying that guitar has taken over my life and ive got an unhealthy obsession with it and its really bad blah blah blah etc. Ive only been playing about a year and i play as much as i can because i really enjoy it. The last few months, ive been playing about 2 - 6 hours a day on average. Is this really so bad? I started guitar to try and be constructive in my free time. Apparantly it isn't. I thought it took alot of practice to become good at something. I quit my school army cadet thing today that ive been doing for 3 years or so. Now my mum thinks the guitar is to blame. I mean wdfomgsh!£!** I quit because i don't enjoy it anymore, not becase i want to play awesome morello solos. Theres loads of other things that piss me off, like today, i was blasting some muse on my speakers and playing along with it, and then my mum comes in and tells me its too loud, which is fair enough because it was pretty loud. So i turned it down, but it was apparantly still too loud. Then i turned it off and mum went out my room, and i started playing with headphones, but she said she could still hear it!!!!!!!!! **** !
Sometimes i just feel like burning down stuff so what should i do? I know there is no point to this thread but im pissed off and i need some advice. I know people play way more than me. Its just my mum being paranoid isn't it? yeh? yeh? Or maybe i'm paranoid.?!! Il go now thx k bye.

No it's not unhealthy. I practice several hours a day, I just try not to do it when and where I'm going to annoy people.

Burn down stuff. Believe it or not, some of us have worse problems. Deal with it.

It's probably because she thinks you should be doing school work or something, that's what my mum says to me. What she doesn't realise is that this time would more than likely be spent on myspace (embarrassing I know) or here.

Yeah my mom does it too. Just make sure playing guitar doesn't hamper other aspects of life
#12
i get that sh!t all the time...

don't spend too much time with your band cuz you know school comes first
you know you wont be able to make a living with music in today's economy
blah blah blah...i just ignore it, play, play some more, and i ALSO make sure i do well in school. she has no idea what music means to me and what i advise you to do is to understand her ignorance and let her say what she wants and not let it phase you from playing. make sure you try keep her happy too, mom's aren't pleasant while sad or angry.

keep on keepin on man.

Buy an ounce of coke an ounce of heroin, a crack rock, and a bag of weed. leave it in your pockets and when your mother does your laundry she will find it and when she makes a big deal about it, tell her guitar was your antidrug

most pothers do it, but with most things

first is was the computer, then it was my bike, now its my drums, and she thinks i do drugs cuz i go out, and she says i have all the symptoms of a stoner...

just get on with it and ignore her, as long as your happy and can afford it, then what problems have you got

if you would be happy with a single room flat, and then to play your guitar in that room, and had a job to pay for it. if that was all you wanted why cant she be happy for you. tell her that see what she says. my mum was blanked when i told her the equivalent of that for what i want.

Oh what an easy response to make.. Now i will contribute with my non-helpful comment.

Seriously though i don't see whats wrong with practicing maybe you should do school work or something instead of practicing all the time.

You're asking this on a guitar forum. What do you think?

Anyways, move out, get a job and pay your own bills, then you can do anything you want. While you live under your parents' roof and they provide for you and support you, you go by their rules. So sorry.
Dear God, do you actually answer prayers?

Yes, but only in a way indistinguishable from random luck or the result of your own efforts.

My parents actually encourage me to play more guitar. They're buying me a mesa boogie dual rectifier for graduation. Mainly because I've spent the last couple of months writing, and they're impressed with it.

put your amp right next to her while she sleeps and play raining blood full blast, that'll make her think you're crazy and she'll leave you alone out of fear

Well as long as you are getting your schoolwork done I don't see what the problem is. Tell her that playing a musical instrument is actually very beneficial to your brain, and that just because guitar is seen as less musical than the piano (for example) by some doesn't mean that it is. It's still hard work y'know. Plus it's great to have a hobby.

What does she think you should be doing with your time then? Going out and underage drinking and scoring smack or something? At least you are doing something productive... plus music (especially guitar) is a social thing so you can make a lot of friends that way, if she's worried you're indoors too much or something.

Sounds like your mother is too obsessive and doesnt tolerate many things.
If you dont eat or sleep or drink or go out with friends cause you have to play all day then this makes you be ill and addicted. If it's a hobby or a true passion and you play when u can but do other normal things that other people do then it's fine, where's the problem? Have u tried to talk to your mum and explain something?

If it's too loud.....playing with headphones isnt the same thing and it hurts more so try to explain her that to play certain things u cant avoid using an amplifier and be loud...do u play metal or rock? If yes of course u have to be loud or you will lack pleasure and passion.
